Reports of allot of bunker...
In CT waters. Norwalk/Bridgeport as well as North shore of LI.
yeah baby, won't be long now :humpty:
Ok let me preface this report by saying it is 2nd hand, but a fisherman friend told me that a couple of days ago he was going over the Jamestown bridge and saw "a school of pogies 2 football fields long" heading north. I know they have been on the north end of Long Island for a couple of weeks now so it's possible. Anyway......it's time!! LET THE GAMES BEGIN!
FINALLY!
Well were they pogies or bunker? :hee:

Bunker are definitely around the east end of Long Island. I just received word of the first weakfish @ 15 lbs taken by one of the commercials!
pogies, menhaden, bunker = same species
crunchies

was out yesterday- saw a small pod of bunker in the Thames River (new london, ct) near the I-95 bridge...........
Several tackle shops reported pogies in the bay yesterday.
I heard the bunker been seen in good number in the fish traps off ****

I believe I saw the same |
Saw them myself, the Bay is loaded with bunker right now...There everywhere.......
Does anyone know the regs in RI on using a small gillnet to gather bait?
Thanks. |
Well I would not have beleived it if I did not snag them myself, But I snagged 2 yesterday in a Bay down on the cape of which I have never seen Bunker before, BRing it on!!!! YEEE HAAa
There is full size bunker all over the Cape.
I know what i'm doing next weekend...
Me too!
Maybe all that wind and weather had something to do with it.
I hope you give George Bush credit for this.:hihi:
Nice days ahead, looking forward to the results and the war stories!!
I can't wait to get out there this weekend. Is a castnet effective for getting bunker as well?
In mass I think that is all that is allowed and only up to a certain size too. I do not think they allow gill nets for moss bunker anymore. We used to use them years ago in Monument Beach. But I am wrong every day so maybe someone else can verify. P.
there are usually reports of menhaden and very large bass on the north shore of long island by late march. strictly catch and release fishery.

no bunker
There are absolutly no menhaden, bunker, moss bunker or pogies, north of the mason dixon line. Stripers do not eat menhaden, they make them sick. Stripers like shrimp, crabs and worms, very low fat diet. Hence, the skinny bass we call keepers.
Menhaden are best suited for reduction, rendering desireable consumer products. Please do not feed menhaden to Striped Bass. Thank you, A-- Bait. |
They actually wintered over in western Long Island Sound this year on the CT side. First time in my 47 y.o. memory that has occurred.

:humpty: yes they are best left for chicken feed. |
Any theories for why they might have wintered over in the western LI Sound?
Perhaps...
...it was the mild fall and early winter? Remember the shirt sleeve weather in January? Maybe they liked the conditions and hung around, only to be trapped when the freeze set in in Feb.? Just a thought.
They winter over in certain places every year...Seen it myself....Bass hate them though....http://www.world-of-smilies.com/html...ewalt/d066.gif
