knot for tippet to fly
Hello all,
I am in search of the "perfect knot for tippet to fly connection. I switch between loop, improved clinch and a few others. Please note; I like a shock tippet that is either 50# - 70# flurocarbon. I use 50# in sand and 70-80# in the rocks. My tippet is usually 12-18". I am tying some big herring flies tonight, tandem hook and lots of long saddle hackle. April is just around the corner!!! |
To tie to that sized shock leader you should probably stay with loops. Two good choices are the perfection loop and the Homer Rhode Loop. These knots test at only 70 to 85%, but it doesn't matter with 70# shock leader, it'll hold well after the 25# test of your fly line parts.

My Fly Rigs
I Have this strong albright variation the the guy at the fly shop tied for me when i bought the line. The knot is looped.
i tie a perfection loop at the start of my leader, and loop-to-loop them together. i cut the length and then tie in some smaller mono using a surgen's knot. number of wraps depends on #test the important part is that i leave the tag end of the heavier line extra long, so i can tie in a dropper if i want to.... I usually tie the fly on using a perfection loop...lets the fly move around & look more realistic. |
Parker, I use a small duofast clip. That way I can change flies quicky. I use 5' of stiff #30 mono for a leader, never had a problem even with Blues.
