Goo Goo

Any weight in these? Wood type? I will need to fabricate some of those eyes and that very thin stock material lip that screws onto the front of the plug. Any pictures of those eyes or the plug itself. I have one VB lent me, yes Peter I still got it, but the eyes are not in great shape. Thanks for the help. Paul

Biteme 11-09-2006 10:44 AM

Paul I think the original eyes where beads cut in half with a small nail tacking it on

The Dad Fisherman 11-09-2006 11:42 AM

Paul, I also think NJTackle sells the GooGoo lips so that may save you some work.

I checked out an original a couple months back and they didn't look like they had any weight in them......felt real light.

numbskull 11-09-2006 11:46 AM

Somebody reissued these some years back. The big ones I have (which are not originals) weigh 4.56 oz. I suspect they are birch, since I can't see that they are weighted and they weigh too much to be pine at that size (and one of mine has cracked which pine doesn't usually do). I have a smaller original that I think is pine and weighs 2.4 oz. You're welcome to borrow one if you want.

Numbskull..
Pics?

ProfessorM 11-09-2006 11:53 AM

The one I have is very light I don't think it is weighted. Also screweyes not thru wired, which I will do. That's right, I will look into the lips, I forgot that they make them. Thanks daddy. Thanks George maybe I will stop by. I know I said that before but this time I mean it. I will Pm you this week for directions and time the is convenient for you. P.

That jointed thing is very interesting. I love those eye's. Maybe a troller with a groove for a skin. Let me see a few more colors. Thanks P.

goo goo's

I posted some pics of my goo goo collection a while back. If you look up my posts in this forum
you should find them. Let me know if you want any close ups etc and I would be happy to post them. I have made some goo goo styles up. They are pretty easy to do. They were made with many types of eyes over the years. They first had a bead nailed in and painted. Later on they had different types of doll or animal eyes ranging from 9 to 10 millimeters some veined and some not colors were yellow and amber. I recently found some 9 mm veined green ones that work pretty well. One story my mother, who knew Leo Cooper, told me is that he countersunk them a. Little so that air bubbles may come off the plug. No idea if that is true but is interesting anyway. That big daddy is a great plug. A blue one caught the 54 lb bass in my avatar. Got to run I am typing this on my blackberry on the train and fingers are getting tired.
Eric

Backbeach Jake 11-09-2006 05:46 PM

I wondered what happened to your avatar..... Were Goo-goos meant for trolling rather than casting? The one I have feels like it'd cast like an egg carton.

Flaptail 11-09-2006 05:59 PM

Capt. Frank Sabatowski, who captained Charlie Cinto on the night of his world record (unofficial to the IGFA but still official to me) with a Blue Goo Goo Eye used to wire them through himself and he also grooved his for eelskins. Capt Ron Murphy of the Stray Cat out of Hyannis and who is an old friend of mine got a bunch of Sabby's plugs from his widow when Sabby died. 99% of them were Goo Goos only a few Atom 40's in the pile.

No need to bandsaw ... I've stripped some down bare naked and re-finished,,,and reassembled ,, No Weighting

I also do not think the big ones were weighted. The poppers have a little bit of weight you can see on the bottom. I've never cut one open yet though. Don't have one that is enough of a beater.

The big ones don't cast very well I have found. My grandfather however caught a 60 lb'er on a blue goo goo swimmer off scituate many years ago, so they do cast well enough to catch fish.

I've caught a good amount of bluefish on the little 4" swimmers. They hold up pretty well I think with the screw eyes and being made out of a softer wood.

Here is a link to some pics I posted a while back.

Goo Goo Eyes

2 Attachment(s)
I've have a few Goo Goos and they changed the eyes at one point, but I don't know which one came first - I suspect the eye using the big headed brad was first.

Here are a few closeups of the eyes. I took some apart awhile ago to refinish them and don't have the parts with me. I can take a picture of the removed eye if you want, but I remember the eyes being almost completely round with a hole drilled thru with a counterbore for the brad head.

The first 2 pictures show the eye with the recessed brad head (black pupil).

Goo Goo Eyes part 2

Here are 2 pictures of the other Goo Goo eyes - solid plastic. I haven't taken any apart to refinish that have these eyes so I don't know what is below the wood. The eye diameter is 1cm.

The big Goo Goos and the Husky Dudes that I sanded down didn't have any weights in them.
