Hat trick in the surf
 

fished with decksweeper last night in a new location

spooky with all that fog

well anyway, i was fortunate enough to watch decksweeper nail a hat trick in the surf

big bluefish.....about 33"
bass..............17-20# class

and then he sets up on a fish.....i hear the drag going slow but steady...

ask if he needs a hand with that one and he says ....ya, I think so


after a 4 to 5 minute battle and me hopping a couple of dozen rocks to get over to him and land the fish.....the fish is in close....the lights come on

A SHARK.........5-6 foot range

not a dogfish....caught enought of them on the boats to realize it was not

here's the real question

what kind of sharks roam ther rocks...have no clue what it was

it was not a baby blue...............so what kind do you think it was

anyway...cool night

Maybe brown shark?

probably a brown shark. i.e. OTW last month or two months ago.

Bryan, I didn't back up. I was high and somewhat dry..Jim was the one whose limbs were in jeopardy....

Jim thanks for the help...I would have done the same for you. YEAH RIGHT!!!....I would have cut that leader well above the hook...

I once ran into some divers who were almost running away from a surf fishing spot one night. When asked what was happenening , they both said they had run into a big shark right in close amongst the rocks where we were fishing. I think there are a lot more sharks in close than we would like to admit.

Near Squibnocket alone last fall (with seals around) on a full moon night I had one that must have been almost 9-10 feet long (5-6 ft between tail and dorsal) swim past me twice maybe 30ft from shore. Fishing was so bad that the second time he came by I put on a big white danny and tried to interest him (to no avail). Stayed ankle deep the rest of the night.

a small l threseher was caught off prudence earlier this year, did it have the long tail?

It did have a really long tail but I've never caught a shark in the surf, so really had nothing to compare it too. Jim asked me if I wanted to get a pic of it....I should have...I think I was just anxious to get it back in the water with all parties unscathed...

5-6ft threasher would have a 3-4ft+ top tail lobe... very noticable

It looked pretty normal to me. Long tail, but nothing unordinary.

all I would have been looking at was the mouth!

Agreed.

I will also vote for a brown or dusky shark. I am not exactly an expert on sharks but that seems like the best guess after ruling out thresher, blue, and looking at the description.

I hope all you wetsuit guys are paying attention. :D

Waders, wetsuit, snowsuit, makes no difference is something 6 feet long decides it wants to dine on your legs. Nice hat-trick. I would have cut the line WAY before he got close.

Between Discovery's Shark Week, my baby Mako catch close to Newport, the action at Chatham, and the warm water temps I swam back to shore from my rock at a rather brisk pace about 1/2 an hour ago.

I was almost on plane at one point...

When I was getting my P.D.I.C. (Scuba), we had our ocean dive classes held at Sakonnet Point. We were suiting up in the dirt parking lot and noticed a dive flag already out there. After the bunch of us got suited up we headed down to make entry. 2 Divers were exiting very quickly, constantly looking back. The teacher struck up a conversation with the 2 divers and quickly cancelled the class. Apparently, there were some fish nets out not far off the point and they headed out that way for some spear fishing. Visibility was poor that day so they got pretty close before being scared sh*tless after seeing at least 1/2 dozen sharks tearing up the net. They claimed the sharks to be at least 10' long, speculating due to the clarity of the water. They watched for a few minutes but could not keep track of all the sharks.

Probably a brown shark, they get to be around 200 pounds and can be caught on dead eels...or any dead bait.
