Thanks for the quick feedback. I did call the Jet distributor. They said the shippers are sometimes harsh. I bet most of the "gunk" is just surface protection, but it does look like the machine...

Just got a Jet mini 1014i from Amazon. The box arrived pretty beat up. The lathe looks like it has been set up in a shop for six months.
