Its perfect for someone who can actually use a computer, but doesnt use it for much outside the basics. Someday it might be a truly viable competitor, but untill then, its certainly not for everyone. I work for Plumchoice/Firedog part time, and 99% of the people I talk to do not even know what an address bar is in Internet explorer or firefox. That damn google toolbar/yahoo toolbar/aol toolbar/etc is a plague that needs to die.

Linux=open source(free and fully tweakable).
Windows(Mac)=closed source(pay and you get what you pay for.)
I can tweak my OS,you cannot.
Btw you can use Linux for way much more than the "basics" as you've stated.WAY much more.
I'm just a guy who doesn't like paying for unnecessary sh!t...which in this case is all the BS that comes with Windows(Mac).
