I'm sure it was a joke but a really stupid one. I would actually like to hear from the more enlightened boaters out there about what us kayakers can do or not do to avoid problems.

As I mentioned, I'm a boater and a kayaker. The only time kayakers need to be more diligent and knowledgeable is when they paddle right through narrow channels. Our kayaks only need several inches of water to paddle in. Boats aren't afforded the same luxury. It wouldn't hurt for kayakers to learn the boating rules of navigation including aids to navigation (channel markers) and what they mean to boaters. I have seen many kayakers that paddle right down the middle of a channel and not give way to boats one bit. I would still never consider deliberately throwing a wake at them.
