I'm sure it was a joke but a really stupid one. I would actually like to hear from the more enlightened boaters out there about what us kayakers can do or not do to avoid problems.

As I mentioned, I'm a boater and a kayaker. The only time kayakers need to be more diligent and knowledgeable is when they paddle right through narrow channels. Our kayaks only need several inches of water to paddle in. Boats aren't afforded the same luxury. It wouldn't hurt for kayakers to learn the boating rules of navigation including aids to navigation (channel markers) and what they mean to boaters. I have seen many kayakers that paddle right down the middle of a channel and not give way to boats one bit. I would still never consider deliberately throwing a wake at them.

Thanks Bo! I think your right, that kayakers should learn the rules of navigation and actually stay away from chanels meant for power boats if possible.

It was only a pun people. I really wouldn't want to collide with a Kayaker and I take all precautions when around them.

There is ignorants and arrogance on the water regardless of what type of water craft one uses. Some weekend days I stand by the second busiest bridge in the country to watch the ignorants of boaters not giving way to the boaters coming out of the riverside that have the right of way.

Are we visable enough? I wave my bright yellow paddle blade above my head a few times when I see boaters in my vicinity. If you wave back(not just to be freindly) it tells me you have seen me and I can concentrate on staying out of your intended path.

In open water situations, I sometimes have difficulty judging the direction a boat will take. Its scary when I have taken evasive action to avoid being in a boats path and then still not being sure what side it will eventualy pass.

As far as marked chanels, I stay out of them whenever possible, and when it's not I paddle as quickly as I can to get out of there.

Send a message via AIM to BigFish
When I "cross" boat channels I always yield to the boat traffic and try to pass without causing them to break their speed or path. Pretty courteous for an ass--le......don't you think??

Or..."Yak-Douche'" as the case may be!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!
