Funny you mention that....the cost is exactly what got me into tying. Way back when, when I did only fresh water fishing and no saltwater...i had no problem in buying the flies at $2.00 a piece. Soon after i got into saltwater fishing and started throwing $5.00 flies to bluefish I knew something had to change.
I did tye a couple diffrent freshwater patterns (wooly buggers & mickey finns) but always thought it was too much work to tye those little flies. I had my freshwater breaking point last year when I ended up catching more ticks than trout.
Since then I've started tying lots of different saltwater flies.....decivers, flatwings, hairwings, shrimp flies, worm flies, crease flies, poppers, mylar minnows, other synthetic flies....and a few 'experemints' that just make my shake my head when I see them in the tackle box.
Strange that now I enjoy the tying almost as much as the fishing.
