Lasik
Getting to the point where the pros are going to outway the negatives about moving ahead with Lasik, anyone who's out in a boat or at night fishing will understand why glasses are a pain. Add in my love of golf and skiing and I'm getting close; its always been about the expense. So I have access to some coupons and two very good recommendations on the Nielsen Eye Center. Anyone been there and used Dr. Steven A. Nielsen?
Love to hear the good, bad and hopefully not the ugly on Lasik in general. Need to make a decision before replenishing my flex spending account for the coming year.

I had RK (Lasik's younger brother) done about 17 years ago, and I still don't have to wear glasses. I still have problems at night while driving, especially when it's wet and there is a glare. Pretty quick surgery, about ten minutes an eye. For a few days after the surgery your eyes are very sensitive to light. You'll notice a difference almost immediately however, and I would recommend it. Good luck

Night driving glare is most easily solved by going to walmart and buying a yellow lens'd pair of SHOOTING GLASSES for those dark rainy nights. They allow you to stare directly at oncoming headlights and it won't even bother you.
I tend to get distracted by all the pretty colors of tail lights, traffic lights
and side marker lights combined with street lights and of course the glare of head lights... making seeing that much more difficult
then i grab the shooting glasses and it basically ends that.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lasik has come a long way... back in the old days they would remove your lens then " chill it" and put it in a special lathe to turn it like a bowl then stitch it back on...
now it's done a much better way with lasers and is much less traumatic.

someone told me that they make one eye near sighted and one eye far sighted to even it out. is this true? unfortunately, lasik is not covered under my company benefits would LOVE to get rid of these glasses and not deal with contact lenses either.

I had it done 5 or so years ago. What an amazing improvement. Surgery with the laser was 20 seconds per eye and sight is now 20/15. I would not hesitate to do it. PM for doctors name .

Thier equipment is made by Mattel.
Outside of the joke I would love to get rid of my glasses as well. Those moisture laden foggy mornings on the canal are killers. But I need them for distance and reading.

Maybe so!
I keep contemplating having it done but a guy at work had terrible problems when he had it done. Glad it worked out for you Matt.
You only have one set of eyes and my vision isn't that bad so it keeps me from pulling the trigger.

I had it done about 10 years ago. It was the BEST thing I ever did! Vision is perfect. No night problems. I wear sunglasses more than usual for light sensitivity but don't we all fishing anyway. I used a Dr. in Plymouth next to the registry who is affiliated with Mass Eye and Ear. He came WELL recommended from a friend. As for Dr. Nielsen I hear Howie Carr speaking highly of him on the radio right now.

I have only ever heard of one person who got bad results, and they could correct the problem.

Anyone get monovision, where one eye is done for near and one for far? A friend did that and says it worked great and that he can read without glasses and distance is fine. Since I'm doing this for my outdoor activities, I'm inclined to do both eyes for distance and take what I get for near, I'm fine with glasses at the computer if needed. Still if I knew the distance part wouldn't be a compromise, getting rid of the glasses at the office too would be a plus.

If I could get it done for under 2 grand, I'd jump on it. I'm sick of contacts.

I can't wear contacts, I'd be very interested in doing this. I'd probably poke my eye out with a plug or something after 40'plus years of eye protectors

Had it done about 10 years ago. Had worn glasses for 20 years before that. Always had a hard time with contacts. The procedure took about 25 minutes per eye. They also corrected an astygmatism (sp?). I had a slow recovery. After 3 weeks I still was not seeing well and I was really worried. In the next week it all worked itself out. I now see great. I think it was one of the best things I ever did and highly recommend it.

What if your eyes change in the future? Can you have it done multiple times?
Each time I go to the doc, my prescription is a little different esp for reading

Had it done by Lasik Institute about 6 years ago. Helped my reading for about 2 years but hurt my long vision. At this point I can't see near or far. They also sold me on a warranty that turned out to be total BS. I would do a whole lot of research first...wish I did!

I don't know if it changed since I got it done but the lasik only helped with seeing well FAR. It did not affect close up (according to my Doctor). I had it done ten years ago and my near sight was good back then (before and after the procedure) and remained good for the last ten years. Am only now starting to use reading glasses. For me, it was nothing short of a miracle.

i had cataract surgery done on both eyes two years ago.. about a month apart for each eye surgery. i had worn glasses for 40 previous yrs.
what a difference. 20/15 in either eye. i do have to wear the job lot reading glasses however.
it took about an hour for each surgery. that included waiting for the drugs to kick in, and then waiting for them to go away.
my quality of life really has improved greatly. no more not being able to see at night. no more expense for glasses. will give my eye surgeons # if you need it.
good luck. do not be apprehensive about the procedure. nothing to it.

There is the option of contact lens. The contacts are inexpensive online and can be worn up to a month without removal.

I have an evaluation on tues with Eye Health Vision Centers, and another with Koch Eye in warwick. Im pretty excited to have it done, I was hoping I can get both eyes for around $2500. Is this possible? Or am I dreaming?
being able to wear sunglasses on the boat and tinted goggles while snowboarding. I cant wait.

Beware that if you don't have need reading glasses you'll likely need them afterwards.
So you will look all perty except when you need reading glasses for reading your gps.
Try contact first.

Read Eddies post above.
I wear the contact lens called multivue (near and far sighted) for 4 weeks straight without removing them, no problem.
I was always near sighted even up to this day. There was a time when the contacts I wore were strictly 100% near sighted prescription. With these I could see far and read very well. Years go by when the contacts prevented me from reading as before. However if I take out my contacts I could read with the naked eye perfectly. There is a membrane that is in your eye that is not as flexible at a certain age.
In conclusion if your in your under your early 40s' the nearsighted lasik correction will make you see far and near but after that you'll be needing reading glasses.
The example of my experience is similar to one with lasik.
Get other peoples experience and ask there age and if they need reading glasses
