Bronze Intake Strainer ??????

Since I had the bottom completely redone this season, I did not replace my plastic strainer over the through hull intake.
Now I keep picking up weeds and clogging my bait well pump.

So I have to pull the boat and re-install a new strainer.
I am thinking of the bronze type rather than plastic.
I used to bottom paint the plastic one.

SOOOO...my question is. does the bronze type have to be bottom painted? Will the copper content in the bronze prevent growth?

some times they crust with barnacles if you don't paint them....if you go to bronze it needs to be bonded lest you risk sinking the boat due to electrolysis....

A good run is better than a bad stand!

It will grow stuff........paint it.

You are not talking the entire thruhull combination pickup and strainer Van correct..... just a strainer over a regular round thru hull?

........just saw you had the pic...................

If it's just the screw over the top scoop, just smear some paint on it.
Barnacles will clog it up.
Full thru hull, with valve, has to be grounded like mentioned above

The electrolysis is the big issue. Check out your zincs when you haul it out. All it takes is a boat with a bad ground on the next dock to wreak havoc on your boat's parts. Sometimes it's the marina that's discharging.... If I were in a marina, I would hang huge sacrificial zinc fish every time I tied up the boat.....

OK...paint it.

It should be isolated from anything else. The only metal parts hanging in the water are the engine bracket with its zinc, and the plug which is bronze and still as good as day 1. Funny though, my bronze through hull with valve has never been grounded either and is perfect. 20 years and counting.

Thanks all. Now I have to go get the trailer, drive to the ramp, haul it, screw the stupid thing in place and put her right back in and bring the trailer back to where i store it. (maybe a short trip to a gas station would be in order too...I'll wait until the tank is near empty)

Check your zinc often. Electrolysis speeds up when you have dissimilar metals under the water line.
