Acton family wants the Pledge of Allegiance changed...

to remove "under God" because of their athiest beliefs.

How about we remove the athiest from the school because it conflicts with the religious beliefs of the other 99.999% of the students in the school?

What gets me is that the parents are raising a big stink because the school says the pledge each morning, and for some unknown reason they feel that it somehow has a lasting and negative effect on their kids.
What it has is probably a lasting and negative effect on their bank account! How long before they file a civil liberties lawsuit claiming discrimination and torment for their beliefs? How long before they end up on some "Jetty Springer" talk show?

All I can say is that if the pledge of allegiance is causing YOUR kids so much trouble, why don't you take them out and HOME-SCHOOL them? Why should the majority have to suffer because of the few?
Why not just have the kids taken out into the hall and make them cover their ears so they can't even HEAR the word "GOD" by chance?

Sure, I believe that this family has every right to believe what they want, but if they chose this school without doing THEIR homework, then I say "How does it feel to be so stupid"?

We had a girl in HS who wouldn't stand for the Pledge one morning because she was hung over and when the teacher told her she had to, she claimed it was against her beliefs. Once she said that, she had to stick to it and each morning would remain sitting for the Pledge. This was back in 1987 in Randolph, MA. It was a really big story back then and made it into the newspapers and on tv.

Let me guess, 1987 Randolph.
She either got off the MBTA or BATT bus in Randolph center for school, then on the same public transportation bus back home after school.

Are you implying that she came from out of town? She lived in town and was a Jewish girl who listened to heavy metal?

These parents are setting their kid(s) up for as difficult of a time in school as you can get. And I guess they don't use US currency either "In God We Trust" or the Treasury is their next target for a law suit.

I'm what religious people refer to as an atheist but please don't lump into the same category as that teen from Cranston or this family.

My belief is pretty simple.I don't believe in some mystical being that promises' me if I believe in it and follow a bunch of rules I'll be given immortality after death.I live,I breath,I die...that's it and nothing else.

Put the word god, allah, jesus or johovah on anything you want I don't care. How can a so-called athesit be offended by what does not exist.I simple don't understand why these people are offended to begin with.Like what Johnny said don't say it,or in the Cranston case don't look at it.These people need to get over it and stop wasting time and taxpayer money.

"Under God" was only added to the Pledge in 1954!

The Pledge of Allegiance

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country.

In its original form it read:

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration.

Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

The founders would have motioned to remove it. We can't wade through what the founder's wishes and pick and chose what we like and leave what we don't - we have to take it all.
Separation of church and state. Period. The idea was to keep us of fighting a foreign or civil war over religion while providing a climate of freedom of worship. A few years ago I would have thought differently, but as we move closer to engaging into a global war over religious reasons, I've changed my mind.

And so it happens....

Prayer banner at a Cranston, RI highschool has been removed because of a lawsuit brought by a 16 yo athiest.

Of course the ACLU had gotten involved and instead of a simple "Would it be possible to remove that banner because it offends by beliefs (do athiests have beliefs?)" request we get a civil liberties waste of time and money lawsuit that will cost the school, sity and state tens of thousands of dollars. God knows that the schools are doing so well that they can all stand to give away $177,000.00 for nothing!

This is an embarrassment, not only to the school for having to take it up the ass for this ONE DAMN PERSON, but to the ACLU for proving once again that they don't have the balls to tackle real civil liberty issues and causes, but rather the "Jerry Springer" cases they can all relate to!

Who's the loser in this case? Everyone!
Why? Because this should never have gotten past the stage of the school telling the 16 yo student "If you don't believe in it, don't LOOK AT IT!!!!!"
Once the student, his/her parents n and the ACLU started smelling lawsuit money they played the victim card to the media, which in turn got played like a cheap drum.

With people like this, and events like this being considered the norm, I can't wait for 12/21/12!
