Daily reel maintenance after fishing
Just saw a video of a gent who uses lightly soapy water (think dawn or equivalent) and a soft brush on his reels before rinsing off stating soap cut the salt.
I just rinse lightly but thoroughly.
Does anyone feel that more should be done. Possibly spraying lightly with silicone (after it was dry) ???
Always looking for helpful hints to keep them in tip top shape.

I quit rinsing reels years ago. Preserving the cosmetics of the reel at the expense of increased risk of water intrusion didn't make much sense to me. Keeping them in a dehumidified basement is crucial, however.

On the line of what George said.... I wipe them down a couple times a week with a wd-40 soaked rag... or if the ride home was especially wet.. other than that.. once a season they get stripped and soaked in a vat of kerosene wiped dry and any worn parts replace... they get a LIGHT greasing ...and oiling and then get reassembled and stored in the basement...

Short of the VanStaal, which I hose down after each use.....
I just hand-wipe mine as well.
During a breakdown, I'll give them a good cleaning.
If you have a decent reel AND take care of it WHILE using it....you don't have to go crazy imo, .....now if you're in the surf letting a non-submersible get constantly dunked, then you're fishing with the wrong reel.

So I'm not bright.
Spinners come home, outside rinse if I feel like it.
Squider stays on the boat in the weather, other thumb burners come home and under my pillow.

My winter big deal is I coat my drag washers with Pure silicon that I've had for years.
The same stuff they put in woman's boobs.
Gears get high class grease.
I read about a lot of problems you guys have and thank God I don't seam to have them.

Light pressure hose down and air dry, end of the season, off to Shimano for a $25 per cleaning and free part replacement if needed. Never had a single issue with any of my stradic's since I started using them a long time back. Abu's conventionals I used to break down but now I find someone to work on them, I just don't have the patience or dexterity to work on them any more.
