Short of the VanStaal, which I hose down after each use.....
I just hand-wipe mine as well.
During a breakdown, I'll give them a good cleaning.
If you have a decent reel AND take care of it WHILE using it....you don't have to go crazy imo, .....now if you're in the surf letting a non-submersible get constantly dunked, then you're fishing with the wrong reel.

My winter big deal is I coat my drag washers with Pure silicon that I've had for years.
The same stuff they put in woman's boobs.
Gears get high class grease.
I read about a lot of problems you guys have and thank God I don't seam to have them.

Light pressure hose down and air dry, end of the season, off to Shimano for a $25 per cleaning and free part replacement if needed. Never had a single issue with any of my stradic's since I started using them a long time back. Abu's conventionals I used to break down but now I find someone to work on them, I just don't have the patience or dexterity to work on them any more.
