How BIG
Of a fish does it take to completely straighten a VMC 5/0 Siwash hook with a 6'6" St Croix Musky rod, 12 lb test, and a Penn 5500?

you'd think that the 12 lb test line would break before the hook would straighten...

Eben I would have thought so too, I had no control on this fish at any point, I'm surprised the rod didn't blow up, it was bent right down to the cork

The big question is what line were you using......If that isn't a testament to its strength I don't know what is.

I can compress the barb back towards the shank with my thumb on those VMC Siwash hooks. That's why I don't use them any more
In fact, I'm down on Siwash hooks generally. Mustad stainless are brittle, and the tinned Mustads aren't what they used to be. I'm using Mustad O'Shaugnessies with a HD ring for a single lure hook.

Seems like those VMC's are hit or miss....
Never had an issue with them personally, but this isn't the first i've seen bent like that.

I have a hard time getting them to squish down Mike so I'm a little surprised to hear you say that....u got steel fingers?
I find they're brittle more than anything, but only if you TRY to bend them....doing something you not sposed to do in the first place

I snapped a new 7/0 VMC siwash while trying to unhook a fish last night with pliers...it just snapped, I was real surprised. The trebbles are seem stronger.
I like the shape of the siwash for a tail hook. I think though you need to keep the super sharp, if they don't set and just hang on the tip, you can create a very larger bending moment that prys just about anything open like that. You need to bury that point into the fish IMO.
Nice to see you get them on poppers salty!

That plug was pretty fresh, probably had 10 or so fish on it before this one....

Must have been Moby #^^^^& to bend that hook!!
or.......Picture of plug tell the story. With the treble hook and the tail hook , leverage between the two can bend any hook. Anyway , seeing the plug , the bent hook doesn't surprise me. That sort of thing happens often.

Depending on how the fish is hooked they can use the power of their jaws to straighten a hook. I've seen it happen with split rings and hooks right at my feet, with no pressure at all on the plug from the line.
