Herring Fling

Winter doldrums. No one looks forward to them. How would you guys like to put a bend in the rod fishing for blueback herring? Normally, I would say a winter fling at the UI plant but that looks be closed for security reasons. So we can hook up down here and get some fishing done and MAYBE bury the hatchet in person?

Blueback herring are great fish. You can pickle them, smoke them, use them as bait in the spring. Good baitfish.

No prizes, no winner. Just guys fishing.

All you need is a light rod and reel. 12lb test is plenty. A mustad or sabiki herring rig and some 3/4 to 1.5 oz sinkers.

For clothes, ya need to bundle up. Since we'll be standing on aluminum, heavy boots are good and wool socks are good too. Heavy sweatpants, sweaters, all that stuff. No waders needed. No korkers needed. Gloves are a must!

Lodging is a 5 minute walk from the spot. You can get into the marina with no sticker then too. If you don't want to spend money on lodging, just show up and go home in the same day.

Bring a bucket and a garbage bag. Keep the fish wet in the bucket until you go home, then just toss them in the garbage bag because they are stinky fish.

Here are the CT rules.

You can fish for herring from 12:01 Wednesday morning until 12:00 Saturday night. 25 per fisherman.

Anyone want some great bait for the spring? Anyone interested?

They are a great strong fish on light tackle and often, you'll get 2 to 5 of them on the line at once. It's great fishing if you can put up with the cold.
