how do you tell a pichney from a beachmaster?
I got a plug awhile back from my neighbor that I was pretty sure was a beachmaster. However, I found this picture on Bassdozer's sight and the plug I have looks just like the middle danny down to the silvery sheen of the bottom paint.
So how can you tell the difference?

I think a scratchy lip finish is one way

Yep, The lips were grinded down
another way would be the finish, paint job and condition of the wood..
Meaning not as clean looking or shine to it and nicks in the plug, globs of epoxy around the tail wrap etc.,...

so the fact that the paint is a bit broken at the belly weight indicates its likely pichney...
They swim well, right? I don't think its seen water, so I'm not sure I am gonna try it. maybe I'll trade it to someone who can appreciate it.

They are considered "collectible" now, but I for one fish a few of them especially the Conrad Jrs.. In fact I just took a couple beaters and had them made over with new hardware and fresh paint...

Looks like a beachmaster that has seen use. Someone would probably give you $30 for it, though.

Ground down is not really what I mean. Scratched is more like it. I mean the surface of the stainless looks like it was rubbed with scotchbrite or a wire wheel. I am not talking about the edges but the face surface of the metal. Kind of like a cross hatched pattern. Looking at he bottom of your lip in photo it looks too shinny from what I can see. P.

Here's mine ... big plug 7.5" 3.1 ounces ..no hooks ... also lip shot of what I think Paul is talking about .. I have a couple of more beaters that have same "scuffing"....don't know if this helps but arse loop is clockwise a wound flat ... like you wind rope on a deck ..

Tagger yours is definitely an original Danny. The other plug is not. It's either a bm or a private builder.
The paint is different.... Fade line on the blue is not the old paint that Pinchney used..that with the lip is a real Danny.. I've got tons of them here if you ever want to see them up close. Plus the original dannies had a very grainy finish in the paint.

Two things stand out to me that shows the difference in both a Beachmaster and Pichney from Tagger's (Pichney) plug.
One, the wood grain is much more rough , dings, nicks etc.. and second the swivels are hanging, Bobby who started turing the Beachmaster plugs likes to bury those swivels so you can barely see them.. And that does looks like a Danny Pichney Grinded Down Metal Lip...
