I was there for 2 weeks about 10 years ago. We did a light-tackle salmon trip out of Seward, and a bottom fishing trip for halibut out of Homer. Can't remember the names of the boats, I will try to look that up. Very expensive to ship frozen fish back home, but worth it.
I will say this...on both trips, most of the boats came back to the docks at the same time, and everyone looked like they had similar catches.
I will also say this...I am insanely jealous. If (when) we go back, I want to do some fly-in fishing for dolly varden and sheefish and pike, in some of the mountain rivers.
I wasn't the same person when I came back from that place. I couldn't believe the spectacle, and I saw 1% of what there is to see. Spent time in Anchorage, Homer, Seward, Brooks Falls (bear viewing and fly fishing), and Denali National Park.
Highlight for me was Brooks Falls, watching the bears stand in a waterfall and catch salmon out of midair, 20 feet in front of me.
You will not regret making this trip.

If you go on Princess Cruises I've heard that the ship Diamond Princess has a really good Asian buffet on the Lido deck.

Thanks Jim,
This is largely a DIY trip with my parents before they depart on a cruise. Obviously some glaciers will be on the trip, but we will definitely do a little fishing.

Spent two weeks beginning of September in 97 but didn't fish. Watching guys snag 30lb kings on the spit in homer was crazy. I remember more of the halibut boats coming in at seward. It is heaven and i will be back to fish. I gotta add one of those incredible halibut to the list.

I fished for halibut out of Juneau. Talk about boring bottom fishing.

call these guys. Several of my friends in the Navy (2005) went out with these guys while I went salmon fishing on the anchor river. They came back LOADED with monster halibut. Over a hundred pounds of filets between the 6 of them was brought back to the ship, about 1/2 of which was cooked for the crew and the rest was frozen in the ships freezer along with my 3 salmon to be taken home. http://www.northcountrycharters.com/...ns.htm#sixpass

You know the pen senator /trolling rod set up for ripping jigs with wire line? Take off the wire and put on 50 lb test mono and tie on a 32 ounce bullet head jog with a 14/0 hook. Then instal a whole mackerel, an octopus tentacle and a herring filet on the hook and bounce it in the mud. When you think you have hung up on a log, and you think you are reeling in a log, guess what.... it's a halibut.
If the oaks go halibut fishing it will only solidify their love of the black feesh

Bryan - back in 2008 our mutual friend the late Ezidro "Zeke" Silva sent me this photo from Alaska. He filled his freezer with salmon and halibut. Miss him. Enjoy your trip knowing you'll be fishing the same water.

This time frame is during the king run. Talkeetna river, fish bone charters. Jet boat access to king salmon bank fishing. Or tailor it to other species, dolly varden etc.
If you want to be bored go bottom fishing or trolling in a boat ...Snooze!
The ultimate is to take a plane into back woods and fish for giant rainbows or browns or pike.

That is definitely not for me. I would have to find someone to take me jigging for them. There are guys who do drift fishing with fairly light tackle, braid and 6-8 oz jigs.
