winter reading
Anyone got any good recommended winter reading (I know this comes up every year at about this time)? not necessarily surfcasting or striper books (read most of them), but books that relate for fishing or the sea.
I have "Fishing the Baittail" by Al Reinfelder on the way (finally found a reasonably priced used copy on Amazon) and I already read Zeno's book (highly recommend that one).
Another book that I would recommend is Bruce Knecht's book "Hooked: Pirates, Poaching, and the Perfect Fish". Its basically an interwoven story of the pursuit of a pirate chilean sea bass boat by Austrailian fish and game officials and the history of how the chilean sea bass (patagonian tooth fish) rose from trash fish to being so highly prized that it was fished virtually into extinction over only about 10 years.

Do you have Profiles in Saltwater Angling,by George Reiger?Probably the best book ever written about the pioneers of saltwater fishing.

Night Tides by John Cinquemani I read that book every winter... I read only the second half though that's where all the little lessons are hidden. Plus it gets me amped to go fishing!

Night Tides is very good. Its kind of like Twenty Years on the Cape in that its not meant to be a how to, but there's a ton of valuable information in there if you look for it, and the more you read it, the more you find.

So anyway, does anyone have this book.I mean it when I say it.This book should be in anyone's library who fishes saltwater.Mine is autographed by the author, the binding shot from too many re-reads,and the chapter on Al Reinfelder the best I have ever read.

"Ship of Gold" by Gary Kinder. True account of the loss of a gold carrying passneger ship of the North Carolina coast in 1850s. Then turns to the attempt to locate and salvage the gold in deep ocean.
Nothing to do with fishing, but one of the best books I've ever read..
Also, "Shadow Divers", about deep water diving to locate and identify a wreck off of NJ.
"Giant Bluefin" an excellent story of the Cape Cod bluefin tuna fishery.

"A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson. Obviously not fishing, but good winter man book and funny as hell.
The Complete McClane is real good. It’s a collection of stories he(McClane) authored on a number of different fishing disciplines. Good reading level too.

I want Charlie Soares' new book, and hopefully new book by John Skinner ,the surf editor of Noreast. One of the best surfcasting minds around.I heard his book is in print right now.
Re-read Shinning Tides as I do every year.Probably my favorite book
Thanks to many of you for planning to read my new book.I hope I don't annoy anyone by my inability to judge demand ,especially in RI but I am out of books. The first print run has sold out, and next printing is in works for late January.Unfortunate ,due to some corrections necessary ,and this being a Christmas season, everything moves at glacial pace. What it means is that I probably wont be able to restock your local retailer if he runs out of books.Plenty of Striped-bass.com sponsors have them in stock ,including SWE,SRI ,M&D's and others so if you want them under the tree, I suggest you start typing now....
Happy Holidays

I don't think you should worry .
SRI and SWE have enough (I hope) to get them thru Christmas season. There is not much I can do ,my printer is shutting down next week so all I can do is sit and wait....and wait
Man ,all those books gone in 14 days...you guys must be firing up a LOT of fireplaces

Finished it up
Its about a seasons worth of experiences from beginning to end on Long Island. Not actually one season but many stories woven into one season.
His stories keep you glued to the pages and his writing style transforms you on location. You almost feel like you are standing next to him and casting.
Although this is not a "how-to" book ,if you ever wanted to know what makes one of the best surfcasters on East Coast tick, how he makes decisions of where to go,what are his reasoning when taking in account baitfish ,current and winds you have to read this book.

John Skinner's book is an excellent read. I read it twice. Once for enjoyment. Then again for content.
