Estimated my fuel costs for the season...
Even with my reduced usage I expect to spend about 6K+ on gas this season. I guess it is not that bad but the sticker shock at the pump sure sucks.
May not put the pots in this year...just too much expense

Do you fill up in the harbor or at the pumps? Over there it doesn't really matter much. The price separates the men from the boys.

I hold 135 and it lasts me about 2 weeks of puttering around give or take. (no long distance runs)
Gas the same here at the dock or at the street. About half the time I gas up at Famouth dock which is about the same as here but the fuel is better. I figure I will use the boat less this year and not run as far which is very disappointing because that is half the fun for me...getting to know distant spots better. Trailering too much of a pain and it will get more and more ugly at the ramps as more and more people do it.
Cape Cod boating is going to take a serious blow this season.
I heard from a friend from New Bedford...boat came in with a load fish ( I think he said 28,000#) ...after refueling, crew made zero and capt lost 4K. How much longer do you think that will go on for?
Time to drill in Alaska.

Man, its getting bad! My fear is its gonna get alot worse!!!  I don't see this misery turning around for at least 2 years or more....if it does at all! Its got me worried so bad I am saving soda cans now!?!?! |

the annoying thing is, a "turn around" will not bring gas prices down. it will just stop them from increasing.
it drives me crazy when i hear someone say. "oh gas is only $3.10, that's cheap!"
That's NOT CHEAP that's just less expensive than $3.50!!
the bounce in prices fools people into thinking when they lower 25 cents that its cheap again.  |

Unfortunately drilling in Alaska won't change the price of a barrel of fuel. Allot of Alaskan oil goes to Japan, eliminating Alaska overseas export again won't change the price per barrel. It is all supply and demand......that big s#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g sound from China modernizing is the main reason for the high price. China is more of a reason for high prices than the GWOT.
Everyday they drill new small oil wells in Texas, this doesn't change the price. They just drill because the price is so good. If the price dropped to $50 a barrel they would shutdown allot of wells for they aren't profitable enough.

Very true.
One thing it is doing is making them drill deeper, less profitable wells, because right now they are profitable. Recently the soon to retire Shell president, when asked about Alaska, said 'Screw ANWAR, we want to drill offshore on the North Slope' That is a decent enough source, but I think the choke point still lies at the refinery. Right now they can drill it, they can't refine it... |

I couldn't afford to run anything more than 15hp right now. As much as I would love a bigger center console i just ccouldn't afford the added expense. I can get around Dux Bay on my 16' skiff and still have a blast.. Oh well, I don't see any end in the near future to this crisis.

I have no idea what I am going to use?? I have a 23 footer this year with a 225 hp on it, for the last 10 years I had a 20 footer with 175 hp, I am guessing I will not use much more then I have on the oter boat.
But I moved last year and now live in Wareham, its 25 miles to Falmouth by truck, and 10 miles by water to were I want to fish. then 23 miles to sell fish in New Bedford.
I am thinking to use the Fairhaven ramps, its the same 23 or so miles to the ramp and same 7 to 10 miles to the fish, but when I come in I am right there at NB to sell the fish saving the 50 miles & the time to drive and sell.
But the bad part is crossing Buzzards Bay, it can get real nasty when the wind picks up!!

Well I think the bottom line is if you love to fish whether it be from shore or boat your going to have an increase of say 30% from last year if you fish the same. Save the money up, go fishing and have fun.
Makes more sense than selling your big boat or truck for less than you think you should only to have to spend money on a different rig. Before you know it you just spent more than the 30% projected extra fuel if you did nothing.

well i have a 23' with a 225hp and just put a 9.9 kicker on it last year and will use the 225 just to get to the fishing spot then use the 9.9 to move around...it will run all day on 6 gal

$3.50 a gallon might be a dream come Memorial Day. For those who have bigger boats, imagine what they will have to pay at the docks? I imagine they will be paying well north of $5/gallon. I bet there will many boats sitting idle at the docks this year.

This is going to be expensive. Our avg burn on a 5 hour bass trip is 30-35 gal and offshore is 65 -70 gal.
Diesel was $4.20 at the marina the other day...

Over here (as of this AM) diesel is 4.67, regular is 4.16. No question we will see 5 bucks. I was just watching the news and OPEC is EXPECTING to see 200 a barrel for crude and the price at the pump in the US to $10/gal within 2 years. I think if the tide does not turn on fuel prices we will see the end of pleasure power boating in the US as we know it. Not to mention the ripple effect thru the economy. You simply are not going to take tiny boats with small motors into the waters around here.

At least I know that i am saving $$$$ being in the YC marina.
16$/foot compared to 125+/foot x 21' is well over 2k savings. 
That will buy a good amountof fuel..
Plus our gas is cheaper than most marinas that sell to the public. (which we don't) and my house is only 3-4 miles from my slip and i bought a smaller truck better mileage.
Even with all that....

it's my truck that kills me with the towing. 40 miles to the ramp. Can fish pretty cheap, Honda 90 and a 15 hp tin boat, but the darn truck is the thirsty one. May be leaving the boat at work on Cape more often this year.

Every day i think the decision to buy the 14 foot skiff and 25 hp 4 stroke was a good idea...thank God I live right here in Hyannis and can get to the water in minutes
