Some big gators weighed in on day 1. Looks like David K. and his boys have found them early. Will this be the year that the 45 year old bluefish record falls?

Always the toughest fish for the grand slam, no shortage in shore bones this year it appears. Hopefully he gets one soon. Looks like good fishing all around except the bass seem a bit small so far.

I hope Jose doesn't screw up the fishing next weekend. Fishing seems to be off to a good start this year - especially the Albies.

Fishing appears to be improving after Jose. New grand leaders weighed in last night for shore albie (12.56) and shore blue (14.98 that's a bruiser from shore...)

Surf Pirate took a daily and 2nd place for Striped Bass Saturday...I heard he has a great captain. Fishing is very slow right now

I need to ask this question, not looking to hijack this thread.
I have never fished this tourney, nor the Striper Cup (maybe once years ago)
But there was another thread earlier this month where several board members here were up in arms about the Striper Cup and the big fish people kill etc. Time to end it etc.
But where is that same outrage about the MV derby, why does this get a pass?
Just wondering.......

get's a pass, due to it's history or fund raising for kids to go to college or that all the fish are cleaned and filleted for the food program on island
This year I am only filling out slips for released fish. Just seemed like the thing to do. Might change my mind on a fly rod shore bone though.

I despise the derby...... but I would note that, in the last decade at least, very few large striped bass are weighed in. Way below what is killed for the Striper Cup or even a blitz weekend at the canal. |

They did change the derby with the times !
no more Albi daily prize , Lots of memo's last year and this year on size and shrinkage 
After weight in , they check ea fish and donate, after pictures etc
If a fish is suspect in any way they put it aside for other ventures, lobster pots etc
Like others have stated this derby is about sending kids to college , donating and sponsorships awards ..... I am not sure but I do not think they make any money at all ? You can donate and claim on your taxes if interested
More big fish were killed in the canal in a week this year , just saying
in the last 5 years not a 40lb was landed from shore during the derby |
