Help my dog sale

I got some really crappy news this morning that my puppy has injured his knee and needs surgery. I can't imagine parting with him and this was obviously unexpected so I need to raise some funds.

I will be listing more things throughout the weekend.

I have had two yellows blow out their ACL. They did not get the surgery and had fine active lives. I live without mine as well. Just saying it is not a must do..... But I totally understand where you are in processing this, especially with it still a pup. You can choose not to, or even postpone the decision to do it.

Ross, I hope you are right, but from what the vet said it didn't sound promising. He said it is a partial tear and do to the way he walks, runs, etc. it will be a full tear and his leg would be unusable very soon if we wait.

get a second opinion. Remember, it is what they (vets) do... There is some selling to your emotions there as well. I was laid up a while too, but you can live without it. Talking minimum 2K, right?

Yea, a good amount of money.
He has a second opinion booked, but the first place we tried to book an appointment wanted us to go in there and then to refer him back to the original vet.
After we finally found another vet, we realized the second opinion alone is a decent amount.

Greg sorry to hear that, but like Ross pointed out get a second opinion.

My 8 year lab mix did the same thing back in october, he was chasing ducks thru a muddy field and went down hard, and just got up and sat there.

I took him to the vet and they said torn acl, they suggested light rest and see how it goes, some pills for the pain and swelling, surgery was the last option, it was a pretty bad tear.

I took him to another vet for a second opinion and they said the same thing, rest and see basically.

After a couple months of light walks and rest, hes fine now, it did take about 3 to 4 months for a full recovery as he always wants to run and play with our other dog.

do what you feel is best, your dog is young so he should bounce back if its a not a bad tear and make a full recovery.

He is booked with another specialist this week, so we will see. From what this vet says, the problem is the way he walks and runs and since it is not from an isolated injury it would never heal because he will continue to do what caused it in the first place.
hopefully this other vet can avoid him getting a surgery since he is so young and active.

Not saying this doesn't happen, but an HONEST vet would never talk you into uneeded surgery. Our vets always take cost into account when dealing with our dogs. The good ones realize cost is a VERY big factor.

Hope things work out for you Greg. Pup's a keeper.

Remember Ross, you can't tell a dog how they can and can't move like a person. So what may work for a human may not for a dog.

Greg, there is a product vetrap which is a flexible self adhered tape. I purchased a two inch roll at Pet smart for less then 3 bucks for tapping my casting finger. It is very strong and will support the dog's knee/angle. If you do not have it now please get it ASAP. Wish your dog the best.

Update: Charlie saw a specialist this morning, who informed us that the vet misdiagnosed him. He said misdiagnosis sometimes happen, due to the age. He needs to rest up (easier said than done for a 7 month old lab) just to be on the safe side, and he should be fine.

Some movement in the knee is common in puppies, in one direction. The original vet didn't know that and apparently applied the rules he knew to all dogs, when it only applies to fully grown ones. Also the original vet examined the dog under anestisia which he apparently shouldn't have.

Greg,make sure you do NOT feed him high protein food.Makes dogs grow too fast and their joints can't support the weight. Also make sure not to over exercise the pooch til he is done growing,2 years is about right.I wrecked my lab with these well-intentioned mistakes. Good Luck!
