Yea, eels are the key. But I have some big eight inch swimmers that do damage as well.

Be encouraging, not discouraging

Last year it was Hogys. Black after dark, bubblegum almost anytime, white at first light. Those things swim like no other soft bait out there and they are tough too. Nothing huge but LOTS of fish in the 20 - 30 pound range. The double hook rig takes like 20 seconds to rig. Love em.

My sentiments exactly John R!

herring, pogies, 12" bluefish, I--legal scup.
Bass don't eat eels, they just kill them because they are so slimey and snakelike and really scary...
Ok eels are definately a large fish magnet. But they do give me nightmares.

If I had my choice ... fresh pogies, nearly dead so they are flapping helplessly ... sending out that help me kick to all the big bass in the area ... as they do the slow flip down ... deadly

... after that for bait its eels ... for plugs, I love the pencils at dawn and dusk ... I love the pencils ...
