How Many Carry a Second Light

Needed my backup light last night. Middle of nowhere. Dark. Went to turn on my light and nothing. Good thing I carry an extra.

I've carried two with me ever since the night I got the Jehovah beat out of me on some rocks trying to get back in during a big swell. A good scare will teach you more than good advice or so I've heard.

Two. Always. A Princeton Tec 40 on some surge tube around my neck and a duplicate spare in my bag.

I also have a USCG approved emergency strobe velcro-ed high up on my wader strap just in case. Old Uncle Zeke used to call it a body recovery device but I figure upping the odds if you go over the side never hurts.

Don't leave home without it.

I always have at least one or two of those Photon micro lights on me. I use the orange colored one when I walk at nite whether fishing or whatever. I pack mine with grease to help stop rust.

I've also started to carry a small glow in the dark compass !! I've not gotten lost fishing, but I have stayed in the woods too long and walking out with no lite land marks is a real drag. Better safe than sorry. Doesn't hurt to carry spare batteries in a Ziplock along with some of those breakfast bars/energy bars as well).

Those Fenix LED lights are the bomb for the $. Those chunky little D123 lithium batteries hold a charge for over a decade. LED bulbs won't burn out easily so you don't need to worry about busting the wire on the bulb.

Always- small red one on my hat and a Maglite with a litebite on a lanyard around my neck inside my shirt. And sometimes I even carry a third small cheapie in a pocket if I have one.

Man - I miss fishing with my partner Zeke. Best darn surf fisherman that not many people know about.

Always have at least a small pen red light as a backup. I can remember using the old heavy Justright headlamps with 4 D cells and the friggin cord from the battery pack up to the light. Damn bulbs would burn out or the cord would corrode at the worst time - too big to carry an extra.

In addition to my head lite (which is always on my neck for some reason) I carry a 6" maglite on tied on a string hanging off my neck and inside my waders. Some nights I don't turn on a light all night but if I use the 2nd light I'm damm happy I had it.

I'm up to 3 on account of having 2 nights where not one but both lights managed to fail.

I've since changed lights but I still usually have 3 lights on me; one small one for dealing with fish and other up close tasks, one bright one if I need it for walking or emergencies, and one more very waterproof back up light.

They're all compact so even though 3 is a lot of lights it doesn't slow me down at all.

the blast has amazing power for a small light

Out at Naps, the point... VERY FOGGY.

I have a head light, and a neck light.

For NO reason the neck light turns on. I turn it off.

a little later it goes on again... I turn it off.

a minute or two later it starts flashing. I cannot turn it off.
I bang it a few times... It goes off.

Again, it turns on and I cannot get it to go out. Now I'm getting creeped out.

I decide to take out the batteries. My greatest fear is that the light will stay on...

It doesn't. Fish the rest of the tide a little unsettled, but no worse for the wear.


I swear, If that light had stayed on I would have crapped myself.

OK,I'll admit it I am a flashlight junky..
I have at least a dozen of em.I bought one last night.
From this neat little one I wear on my hat for tying knots to the big blasters that IMO are still the best light made..And all the P-Tec models in between.
Anyone else have this affliction..??

I use a small headlamp for retying,unhooking fish... and a Surefire G2 nitrolon on a lanyard around my neck to navigate through the surf,rocks,etc... only problem with the Surefire non-LED lights are when they go dead there's no signs of the light dimming and they're $15 a pair for batteries at the nearest pharmacy.

Always have a spare in the plug bag, fits pretty good in the AS medium bag. And carry an extra set of batteries. The headlamp i have eats em fast.

Ahem, in case you hadn't noticed, the British are already here!!

You never know, they may be able to lend you a light if needed......

As for myself, my loyalty from way back is to the Royal Marines who are always able to arrive by land AND by sea
