Brown shark(?) on a plug! - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

After leaving Flo's lastnight for a night of fishing the first and only fish I caught was a shark.

After looking at a lot of pictures I think it was a brown shark.The shape was just right but it was hard to determine color with just my little red lense headlamp.Best guess at size was 2'-2.5' in length.Hard to tell the weight as I've never caught a shark before(other than sandsharks)and it didn't fight like a bass or a blue.

The plug was one of Salty's 2.5" turquoise fire needles.

Definitely was a unigue and somewhat messy,timely experience.Took forever to unhook and free this thing.

Lets see what tonight brings!

Dogfish? I picked one up this year off the beach working a suspending swimmer really slow.

Most likely dogfish, spiney, or smooth.

I am the dogfish master

having caught them on eels, plugs, chunks, and once on a jig.

Actually caught a dogfish while fishing for smelt last night- in the ffffing harbor under a float of all places.

I also once caught a spiny on a bucktail, it's the only thing I have ever caught with bucktails.

that big one is a sandbar shark. they get big, a 100 pounds or so and you can catch them off the beach at night pretty easily.
there's also a smooth dogfish, without the spines, that looks just like them.
big difference is the teeth. lots of them to be exact.

The spiney dogfish is indangered, so they are very rare around these parts

I took 2 of what I think were smooth dogfish. Both took a 5" jointed Redfin. They both took the plug at night from behind in the curl of the wave . The second one was at least 4 ft long and actually fought well.

Hard to tell with out a picture, but most likely a dog fish. though you never know a brown of that size would have probably been from this year as they are normally litters of 1 to 14 pups and size depends on the size of the female. I don't know of any nurseries in our waters for sandbars. I have caught many dog fish on plugs and even top water over the years so it's not impossible.

Sandbar (Brown) sharks pup in all of the coastal estuaries along the east coat. Usually in June or July. Not saying it was a small brown shark, but it is not impossible.

As far as the mouth not much different than most I assume,underneath and kinda U-shaped.

Yea and boy they just love how the feds did that so they can wreak havoc on the cod and haddock fisheries off the cape... dogfish are thicker then ever up there you can hear them knocking into and off of the hull... endangered my left nut... The feds only did that so the .25 a pound fish they could get money off it to..
