I have never gone either. Something on my bucket list I suppose. The only place I have seen a smelt is the fish market. Anyplace in my neck of the woods I can catch them or do I have to head north?

Those look tasty
If you ever get the chance try tinker mackerel and treat them the same as you would smelt (cut behind the head enough to sever the spine a little cut by the anal vent to sever the intestine and pull the head with the entrails out all in one motion, cut off the tail, flour or bread and fry) .
