Fishing Superstitions
I've been meaning to make this thread for awhile and here it is!
Fisherman all have their "lucky" things or rituals, it can be crazy, a tradition, or, to anyone else, just plain stupid. But for us, if it works, the naysayers get skunked and we get fish from the sea and a smile.
This is all for fun!
For me, all the times that I have fished, if I wore a shirt that had a fish picture on it or anything to do with fishing, I got skunked. If I wore a hat, I got skunked. No hat, no fish apparel, I scored time and time again.
So my superstition is that I never wear anything "fishy" and I don't pay attention to my retrieval too much or else it leads to skunks. Also when I am gearing up and hear the bizarre sound of the wind blowing through the guides, it always meant it was a slow day/night. That always creeped me out.
I'll share another: my math teacher in middle school and high school was a big fisherman (actually appeared on the cover of The Fisherman once), he always had a goatee because whenever he had it as opposed to a beard or any other facial hair style, he always nailed big fish. Never saw the man without a goatee during fishing season.
My Godfather always kept the hook that landed his biggest bass of his life on his boat to remind him of the event, but also to bring him good luck. And I swear he was born with a horseshoe up his @$$
So how bout it guys? What is your voodoo?

Whenever Seamule say's "I feel good about this trip tonight/this morning", it pretty much means it's going to suck. I have to remind him before meeting up not to curse the trip by saying it, but he usually does anyways.

So we're house hunting and have had two separate deals fall through because of the sellers. Each time, the misses and many other people say "that's ok. Just means that it wasn't meant to be." I think that mindset is complete nonsense. while at the same time, I refuse to buy a fishing rod that has a fish decal on it with the fish's nose pointed towards the water. My thought process is that I want all fish swimming towards me, not away.

When I owned one, I always "forgot" my GoPro. Did it work? Negative...
I have a bandana from my Unlce who passed away this spring. I will never fish without it again. This season has been my best ever... I am not a religious person even one bit, but I believe that bandana has something to do with it.
Catching a fish on the first cast has also been a bad omen for me...
I am going to try the "leave the fish apparel at home" approach...

i had hot streak last season while my beard was growing, the more it grew the more i caught, i shaved cause we had a wedding to go to and couldnt connect with a fish until it grew out again, now if im doing good in the surf ill keep letting it grow, if it slows down for a few days ill trim it and repeat throughout the season.
Fish on the first cast use to be a bad omen, but now I make every cast count, proven that theory again last night, first cast fish on, second cast fish on, no more bad omen for me anyway.

So you're telling me its not a bad omen and I just suck?... That actually explains a LOT
I also have an "order of preference" of sorts with my plugs. I work through them in the same order every time... habit, omen, superstition... who knows... probably another indication of suck ing (cant combine the two words apparently...) vs bad luck

When I am thinking, I make my first cast a very short one, so as to not catch. Twice after a first cast catch last year, I went hitless all night.

If I sing, I catch fish. If I sing out Loud, I catch more. If I don't sing, I don't catch. Others HAVE witnessed this. So much so that when they started to sing the catch and when they refuse to they don't

If Soups has perfect hair and a camera, fishing will suck. If he just has perfect hair we're usually good.
|
Does your incessant whining make you feel better? How about you just shut the hell up and suck it up? It's a fishing forum , so please just stop.

We all know you are not worthy. I give and give. No need for such harsh comments. I put you in the better spots. I've given eels. I've given eel rigs and hooks. I've tried to teach. One misplaced email and I have to endure this ridicule. I AM A VERY LUCKY PERSON.

If I want to guarantee a skunk I bring a cooler.
I have a WP camera that has never been with me on a trip. I feel I might get skunked if I bring it. Eff it, camera or no I suck at catching. I excell at fishing!

I wont even eat them if I'm going fishing.... I never did.. just out of caution... last February I had one on the way to Winnipesauki..... an hour later I fell and tore my MCL...I wont even mention the fruit if I'm going fishing now...
I MUST have a mediuim black hazelnut D.D coffee for any weeknight Bass fishing trip to be a succss.. it must be bought @ the DD at the rotary in Newburyport or all bets are off...Weekends a thermous must be in tow... no coffee.. no fishies.
If I happen to hear Blinded by the light...long version in it's entirety by Manfred man.... on my way to the boat.. the night will be a slammer... it's never failed me yet...

My 10 year old daughter gives me a big good luck fishing hug before I head out for the night.
Doesn't always work, but when it does her smile the next morning after I thank her for the good fishing is priceless.

The cooler issue applies to me as well. If I tell my wife that we will have fresh fish for dinner I get skunked. I usually start with a parrot darter and if I catch a fish in the first 5 casts it will be a good outing.

Leave the scale in the car. Camera is ok, but scale always brings bad luck.
Also my black commando bag seems luckyer than my white one

3 times so far i have carried my 30lb boga with me and left the 60 in the jeep, shoulda had the 60 but i know it would have been a twink fest if i had it. I lost my lucky smokey joe redfin, i have had it for about 5 years and it was the best redfin i ever had, it was loaded a bunch of times. I lost it, not to a fish, i think i drove off when it was on the roof of my truck, red fins this year have caught about 3 fish.
