Question Putting a small amount of lead in the tail of a swimmer.

What is the reason that a small amount of lead is put in the tail of certain swimmers? Is it to aid casting or slow down the action of the lure? A Danny plug kit I purchased also came with a small amount of lead for the tail.

What types of swimmers usually get some lead in the tail and which don't?
