Well, first off, I wear a sou'wester hat like the one pictured below because my Henri Lloyd drytop doesn't have a hood. Hey, go ahead and laugh if you want to but it's a lot better than a hood at night for your hearing and your peripheral vision in breaking surf on the rocks.
It's a personal safety issue in a swell for me, anyway. Worked for Grandpa, works for me. I actually do still have his old oilskin sou'wester hat in my fishing room.
