Eeling the Canal;
SUR1267C 10'6" G-Loomis w/Calcutta 700 30# Big Game w/40# Seaguar Floro leader w/ a "5/0" Gamakatsu.
Beach's ASRS100M St.Croix w/ a Fin-Nor 16A 50# Braid w/40# Seaguar Floro leader w/ a 5/0 Gamakatsu,but that is If i was using eels
Somebody mentioned something about holding your rod tip @ a higher angle, I agree w/ that you might wanna concider that as a facter,& dont forget braid cuts through water quicker than mono,pending on DIA.
Eben you make good plugs so don't sell you're self short.

i havent caught anything with eels on my 10 ft lami and 704Z and its spooled with 30 lbs fireline. so why do you guys like to fish with mono for eels? wouldnt u miss any slightest bite?
5/0, can u show me how to eel on the canal sometimes? I suck at eeling and would like to observe your ways.

I like eels i fish them kinda weird.I hold the rod tip way high like even back behind my head held kinda loosely.when I feel the pickup i lower the tip an reel up till i feel the line tighten an set the hook.It only takes a second.In all my time fishin I only cleaned one bass wit a eel in its stomach.I believe the hit eels out of aggression then try to kill em an spit em out.wit the fast hook set i started missin alot less fish.I don't like to mix my reels up it gets confusing.so i use a 706 wit 20 or 30 fireline. the 1L is to light for me I use the 120 1M, my 10' glass rod which is nice for eels or my 11 ft arra.

E... that convench set up you have is perfect..... I eel with my VS/1201M when conditions warrant it, (high surf and wind) but when possible my 1089 with a penn 525 and 50lb PP works pissah... at least it did this morning

I like eel fishing the Canal w/ Mono on my convench,you really don't miss many hit's cause you're drift fishing.You're line is already peeling off you're spool so when a fish pick's up youre bait you're line is comming off much faster,you're thumb should be on you're spool so you can monitor you're line speed rate.Some times you can tell when you're eels about to get picked off,it'll really goes nut's just before the fish strikes!
When Jigging the Canal you want braid there's no real strech on you line even when youre 100+ yards out you can feel everything.

Joey--you can fish wearing boxing gloves and still feel a bass hit an eel, even with mono.

Joey, MikeP's right. I think keeping a level head is the hardest part.When you feel the fish, it's hard not to set up hard and fast. Sometimes you can feel the eel slide right through the bass's lips. NIB's method may deserve some further attention.

Live eel fishin acccounts for maybe 10 per cent of my fishing i would rather thro a rigged eel(with a swimplate/squid)I think they work as good or better especially in bigger water.I can't believe they are not as popular in RI an the cape.The're are many different squids to fish in big or flatter water in any level of the water colum.Like ditch says they really wac a rigged ell also.no guess work on the hooksets.They are kinda involved to wrap up prbly why not so popular.I know I should tro em more just dealin wit em is a pain.if i was gonna Go at i would set up a cooler an air pump for the truck an take all but a few plugs out so it would be eels an nothing else i know they produce but its just not a prefered style of fishing for me.

lol, lol. okay, i have a abu 7000CL w/ levelwind and loaded 30 lbs braid on my 10 foot cnvench sealine-X rod. i can give it a try by spooling it w/ a 20 lbs test big game mono, but wldnt i need to put a shock leader and tie the hook directly?

Spool up with 20lb and tie a 50lb leader about 5 feet long to the main line then tie the leader direct to the hook with a polamar knot, tie the main line to leader with a bimini twist..no snaps, swivels etc...none needed
