Last Friday night in the surf I did best with a 7" bomber in yellow striper pattern fished sooooooo slooooooow it was almost stationary. I also moved away from where the most intense action was and found a few fish willing to check out something different.

I have had some success trying to match the bait with flies but when they're busting right in the beach break they are very tough.

Sometimes I think there is so much bait that unless the fly is right in front of their nose they just can't be bothered with it. A friend has done well with a casting egg and small peanut patterns on the Canal. I think in situations where the currents are better defined, like the canal or tidal rivers, individual fish can be targetted and tempted with the right presentation.
