Here are the only questions you need to ask about bluefish plugs:

Does it cast?

Does it have hooks?

Will it stand up to razor teeth and strong jaws?

If the answers are yes, it's a good bluefish plug.

It's also a plus if it swims or at least splashes, but usually that's not a necessity

We should have a contest for the lure with the most bluefish teeth marks in it. I've got an old jointed rebel around here somewhere , I had to shoot it to put it out of miserey it was so beat up (just kidding on the shoot it part).I would hate to see some of the sharp looking plugs I see on this site, all torn up from blues.
BUT WAIT, that would give reason to make more. By George now I get it!!!

Notaro, you should really come down to RI and Bluefish with Clammdigger, he can really hammer 'em. I witnessed this phenominon last season. He was bringin them in one after another with this HUGE smile on his face

My lure of choice for blues is the Roberts Ranger! in chrome!

Yes BLUES will hit anything at times , but there are times they won't. One time in a FEEDING FRENZY I put on a POTATOE PEELER with a TREBLE hook and caught BLUES.... will try to post picture of the POTATOE plug.............

Over the Last Several Years HAB'S NEEDLEFISH Have Caught More "Confirmed" 30, 40, 50, and even 60 pound Striped Bass than any other Wooden Needlefish on the Market today. 2 Over 50lbs. and 1 Over 60lbs. in 2005 alone........... "HOOK UP WITH HAB'S" Your Best Bet For BIG BASS.....

Notaro, just a word of advice dude.

Maybe you should post ONE BIG REPLY instead of 10 replies 1 to answer some ones questions

Do what i USED TO DO, create "Novels" and not little one liners Belive me, i got in alot of trouble for posting like i used to (as you can see ) NOW I KEEP IT SHORT , no more novelz

Back on Topic-

I hit the blues on them Buefish Bombers, Crome/ Metalic Blue.
If iwas you i would replace the threble hooks w/ Singe (much easier to remove from that crazy bluefish)

Good Luck!!!

Notaro, what I would recommend is that you really think about what you want to ask first. So think it out a bit and then post a somewhat short & concise post on what you are looking for too. Other than that - search the forums, read the books, yada yada...

One of these days we'll also get some How Tos in that new How To section that will help a bit...

Thanks & good luck! Don't take this as being a negative but a positive... Please don't right novels - the headaches are too intense....

one thing i would suggest that a one do when targeting blues or when blues are around in large quantities w/ little chance at stripers is to remove all trebles and use a single hook in the rear of the lure. bluefish almost always hit a bait from behind and chop it. having a lure w/ 3 sets of trebles on it is just wrong. we all know how blues seem to fight and thrash more when you try taking a hook out of their mouths. put 3 sets of trebles in there and you have a mess. a lot of people rip hooks out of blues or could care less. this is inhumane. with one single hook in the rear of the lure it makes for an easy release.

this also brings up another topic and that is pliers. do you have a pair of pliers that can cut a 4/0 treble hook? if not, you should. i had to cut a treble hook out of a friend's hand last year after a blue started thrashing around and the treble was burried. i've cut many hooks out of fish due to the barb being wedged into the cartilage of the jaw. i'd rather cut the hook than rip it out of a fish. i'm not sure on the power/cutting ability of vs pliers, but i do know manley's work well. a pair of long needlenose pliers work when you have a hook deep in a fishes jaw.

as far as lures to use when targeting just blues i'd suggest roberts rangers, atom poppers in all sizes, hab's poppers, kastmasters/tin/metal, and jigs.
