I was out on the boat this morning and ventured into the canal from MMA through half way then turned around. Quite a few folks tossing plugs and jigs along the banks...

Three weeks or so until consistent large fish will show. Fill the goodwill jar until then. Just a suggestion.

I'll bet it's closer to 10 days. Sometime between 5/5 and Mothers Day for decent fish. 40" fish will be here by Mothers Day if the past is any kind of teacher

There will be single large fish taken within a week no doubt. I've gotten good ones(20#) as early as May 2, but I'm talking about good numbers of good ones. I did get my biggest canal fish ever on May 19, so who knows. Three weeks from today is the 18th, so I'm probably starting up around then.

This year, the Canal is going to be a ZOO, all those fish last year will draw crowds from far and wide. My buddy was talking to the guys at CMS and they said that the orders for canal sticks have been through the roof... not even close to any other year. There's a lot of money riding on the return of those macks.

I drove the coastal roads from mid-CT through Newport to the canal this afternoon.
In the words of the great Bill Cosby "Can you put this back? Cause it isn't finished cooking! It needs to cook two, three months!" But the hospital made us take it home."
The water is too cold.
The evil black flying devils 100+ strong were anchored at the canal run, no diving or other action. I didn't bother to look at the run. I could smell the fish in the southwesterly breeze from the top of the embankment.
There was not a fisherman to be found the entire trip.
I was loaded and ready to shoot, but have learned my lesson, the 2nd week in May is the date to target.
Light a candle that the trawlers haven't killed all the bait.
