I typically don't engage people, but when pressed I'll feign deafness.

Like others, that's my standard fishing greeting.
Here are a few of my typical responses when greated that way:
"No"
"A few"
"Slow pick"
"Not bad"

I usually remain enthusiastically non-committal
No big deal really and maybe don't read too much into it...

1. Just lie. "Sure, I have been slammin' em for hours. The bite just died. You should have been here 2 hours ago".
2. Tell the "Tool" you work for the Post Office and always "carry".
3. Buy a boat like I did so you can just drive away from all of the "Tools".

Some others to try when asked "Any luck?"
"You mean your wife didn't tell you?"
"Maybe.........is that a Van Staal you have there?"
"Are you kidding, this tuberculosis stuff is a biitch....(cough, cough)"
"Yup, the last guy only gurgled a little"
"Not unless you consider being penetrated by aliens fun"
"Absolutely! They're towing everyone else, but I walked"
"I'll say! They still haven't found any of the bodies"

I will sometimes try to interact with fellow fisherman. I fish hard, put my time in, and have paid my dues. I have no problem asking anyone "any luck?" I am always trying to learn more. And if they give me a attitude I will then mentaly F!@&* with them and then kick their arse.

I hear ya man, happened at the grocery store yesterday, this 80 yr old woman came behind me at the veggie bin and asked "Any specials on corn today?"
I said WTF GRANNY! Cant ya read, I been up all night clipping coupons trying to save to save a dime and you limp on up here and ask me id there is SPECIALS!!! Get a clue Grandma! There is a recession on and its every man for themself!
btw - Any Luck? is the equivalent of "hows it going" in the workplace. I say it all the time at work and can really care less how anybody's day is going. I say it when I bump into someone fishing and care less if they are catching anything. Its just a greeting

He's fishing an area you've been fishing for years and you make contact trying to help the pathetic SOB out ? Then he snubs you ,, the clam up ,,the look .. So you just walk away letting him fish the schoolie area . You just never know when your the dull knife in the draw ...

Seriously??
Maybe you should channel that anger towards the improvement of the striper population and not tear a guy up. I'm quite sure you didnt come out of your mothers womb and know how to fish or where. Its the self righteous pricks that give us a bad name. You never know who your talking to or in this case ignoring. Someday youll be a lonely fisherman.

seeing a newbie....
with a boat....the other day...
(perfect stranger) i asked him a question and he answered with body language indicating that he wanted little conversation....
....not only did i tell the guy where to fish.... and at what depth...
i gave him the precise lure to catch them on.... at my spot
did he believe me....? i dunno.... ( years from now, i'll see him again tho)............. he now has the ball....
will he go there... probably...
or maybe... a couple of buddies joined him right after wards...
i did the right thing...in my minds eye to appease the fishing gods.
as it was a very beautiful day

I just give a nod and if the other person wants to say hello I'll return it.I've said hello to other fisherman and got the fake deaf and blind response.Made me angry at the time so now it's just a nod.

spare me
if you want to fish and not see anyone else, go to Alaska. This is New England and the season is starting up again, cut the guy some slack, show some courtesy. If thats impossible which it sounds like it is for you, make sure you never get a job involving public service.
long ago fishermen were gentlemen and courteous, don't tell me your so hard core this April that you can't at the very least be a gentlemen. I'm not saying your out of line or over-reacting, just remember that fishing is supposed to be fun for everyone.
In our line of business things can get real dicey real fast, you never know when one of your fellow surfcasting buddies or a complete stranger can assist you if your in trouble. Accidents happen, slip on a rock, banged up on the rocks, its nice to know that the person who you treated with dignity and respect is not only gonna help you out of the wash, they just might be the one helping you wade through 4 feet of water looking for that new Van Staal setup you were using!
Respect one another, respect the water, catch fish and be happy.

Hi Flyvice, It was me who you ignored the other day. As you can tell from my screen name, I was just introducing myself to you. I had my hand out. I said "Annie Luk" and was about to say nice to meet you, but you wouldn't even turn around. So I said again, Annie Luk. Sat there with my hand out and was completely ignored. If you had bothered to turn around, you would have noticed I was a hot blond partaking in some naked fishing that day with some of my girlfriends. Oh well, we killed'em anyway that day.

Reminds me of a friend of mine who was riding his motorcycle down the road one day, walking down the side of the road was a guy who was known, probably not to his face, as Dummy. Being a teenage boy he feels compelled to yell "Hey, Dummy". He dumped the bike after another corner, broke his leg and is laying in the ditch as the guy walks by and says "who's the dummy, now?"

Just a greeting, don't feel obligated to give any info. The guy is already there and if you're catching he'll soon know.

Its Funny, but the thing I like the best about the Fall run up on the North Shore is just bumping into people and BS'ing for a few minutes....

While "Any luck?" is a common greeting, in my opinion, it is also a way for someone to glean info from you.
To all of you who think I am in the wrong, let yourself be put in the situation. You are at your honey hole, with a consistent bite going on. There's another angler there, putting in his time, doing his thing, who probably has seen you pick up fish. Along comes John Doe, who asks you "Any luck?". There are basically 3 things you can do, with very little upside.
1-Tell him no, and be found out to be a lying SOB (whether he finds out from the other guy or if you start catching fish in front of John Doe).
2-Answer yes, and risk burning your spot (unfortunately this happens too much around these parts). The only upside would be that he returns the favor one day (which may not happen).
3-Say nothing (which is what I did) and be thought a secretive SOB. I called him a tool because he showed up at the end of the tide with the sun coming up, and because in my opinion, he was trying to get info from me.
What would you do???

Depending on my take of the person, briefly respond non specific & non-committal. No harm, no foul, maybe or maybe not no info. Depends on the encounter.
