Dangers of plastic lures
#^^^^& Fincher of Phase II lures send me a quote from
IN-Fisherman Magazine 8/11that autopsies on fresh water
fish are revealing the stomach packed tight with soft-
baits. These lures are blocking the digestive system
leading to starvation. Apparently there was a similar
report in the Bangor (Maine) Daily News 5/1/09.
I wonder how this is effecting our saltwater bluefish
who chomp thousands of plastic and rubber lures
every year. Do they swallow or spit-out? Has anyone
caught a half starved blue or looked inside the stomach
cavity on any consistent manner Would seriously like to
get an answer??? Let's hear on this.

Falls out as they laugh at you, having destroyed your plastic bait just short of the hook.

Sorry guys, I though I was asking a serious question.
Seems there is a bit of undeserved contempt for bluefish.
I think they are great fighters, can taste delicious if cooked
properly and may be the only game fish left in a few years,
as happened in the 70s and 80s. Like to think we can be
serious once in a while. Let me try once more: anyone out
there found plastic or rubber in stomach of blues????

I've never checked the contents of their stomachs, but almost every blue I've ever caught has regurgitated bait when I've landed them. I would imagine it's some sort of reflex to try to spit the hook. Not sure if they would spit out chunks of rubber lures if they weren't hooked, but I'd imagine they would realize it wasn't food pretty quick.

Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about empowering people to catch up, to give them tools at their disposal that make it possible for them to access all the hope, all the promise, all the opportunity that America offers. - Marco Rubio

I fish soft plastics almost exclusively. I will start by saying that I am confused how a soft bait would find its way into the stomach of a striped bass. I have never reeled in a fish, or lost a fish that has taken the bait clear off the hook.
Blues are obviously a different story. If I get bit by a blue I reel in my soft bait cigar and try something else or move on.
I have never seen a soft plastic in the stomach of a bass or a blue.

EelSkimmer,
I suppose the day will come where this becomes the next angle of some envirogroup, along the lines of banning lead in ponds of less than a certain oz a few years back.
I have never seen rubber in the stomachs of fish though I don't open up most fish I filet.
Is this a concern, yes. Do they barf it out over time, maybe?
The tackle industry should come out with a biodegradable rubber that reacts with the acids in the fishes digestive system.
But where does this stop?
Is the paint that all lure making companies use non toxic?, cause there are plenty of yellow eyed devils that may have tooth desease now. etc etc etc......like the lead paint test when buying a new house.
just my thoughts......
