I have been here for 9 years and love it!! It takes awhile to get around the summer traffic but once you learn to do that its not to bad!
My only problem is when i moved here I was fishing Chatam, Now I fish the Vinyard 99% of the time, and I moved to far up, I want to go back down toward the Vinyard, my wife says no!!!
So I hve to make the 25 mile run to the ramp all the time now. Well still better then 9 years ago when i use to drive almost 70 miles each way!

I was down there in the mid 80's, stationed on a bouy tender back in my CG days. Hung around in Woods Hole for a while afterwards too. Leeside, Captain Kidd, Landfall, Nobska, Stony Beach, etc. Had a blast. Good fishing too

Motel
You should have just used your ferry reservation the day before on a stand-by basis and sleep in the campground on the Vineyard for a few bucks and roll into your quarters on the Vineyard later on in the day. A bad night in the Vineyard campground is better than a good night in a clean bed anywhere else.
