Thanks Goose.

I have never been spearfishing in New England (only once in Key West, with scuba gear, when I was surrounded by fish in 85 degree water with 60 feet of visibility, which is not exactly challenging spearfishing).

I have been scuba diving, and I was a lifeguard/swim instructor in college so I'm a decent swimmer. I always thought I'd like spearfishing, but never had any idea where to start. Maybe next year.

It's all freediving. No tanks. Minimal gear required. Mask, fins, suit, flag, stringer, knife. I'm in from 10 to 25 feet of water, right on the shoreline.

I gathered it was mostly, if not all, freediving (although I did see a guy in scuba gear once, come out of the water at Watch Hill Light, with 2 big keeper stripers, this guy says he uses tanks all the time and still kills fish).

You don't have to go deeper than 25 feet? That's one of the things that gives me pause, as I'm not going to push my luck freediving down 40+ feet and trying to hold my breath longer than I should. I love fresh striper, flounder, and tautog, but it ain't worth killing myself over.

I do some camping every year in Narragansett, I always thought it would be fun to try at the East Wall, which is very close to where I camp.

I may PM you at some point to get some tips on where to start. You don't use a boat or kayak?

It's all from shore. I'm still a rank amateur. A friend of mine set me up with the gear and loaned me the super long fins. He's been doing it for years. He rigged my gun and float line. Showed me a few things--basically held my hand and showed me the way.

I'm not crazy either. I stay shallow. Guys who are extreme about it, guys who dive the Race and Watch Hill, Devils Bridge, Southwest Ledge. The can have that. I got two young kids. All I want is dinner and some exercise. I'm all set with shallow water blackout.

Agreed, I have 3 very young boys, I plan on watching them grow up. Did you get any tautog that day?

When I had a boat, I did a ton of fishing, in very tight to the rocks of Fishers Island (just south of the eastern CT shoreline). I'd imagine that would be a prime spot, lots of bass and tog.

I know. I should re-title it: spearfishing from shore.
