Who says they don't work at night, black over orange or black over red. Slow pop and drop or use the Soups method, 3-4 pops and check the hair, repeat.

It's all about the V wake
I use Pencils at night as a surface swimmer. They have a very sexy wiggle on the surface and they make a very nice V-wake. Sometimes I give the popper a little twitch, most of the time I retrieve at a moderate speed, just enough to keep it on the surface. They are great when there is a good breeze in your face when other plugs stall when casted.
I never thought of a popper as a googan plug, they work for me night and day. Maybe I am still a googan.

1 @ 32 Pledge. Our beloved Striped Bass are in trouble AGAIN.
I fished through the lean years and don't want to live through another collapse of the stock.
2 fish @ 28" is ridiculous.
