I do both (and enjoy both), boat and shore....for bass I mostly surf fish. I actually enjoy hiking and climbing my way around some island looking for that great spot to take a big fish. The personal reward is much sweeter.

But the other day I was boat fishing with my surf rod so close to a beach I could put my eel almost on the beach. Got 10 fish ( in the 20's) from 5:30-7:00am and was back home to take the kids to school. I also enjoyed that trip. Would I rather catch a 50 in the suds? sure. It is just easier from a boat. You can cover an amazing amount of real estate and fish different methods and carry a ton of stuff.
The fish on my wall is a surf bass. I would not mount a boat fish. Unless it was a record fish. A 50#er is a big fish boat or shore but IMO if it was hauled up trolling wire or drifting scup in deep water with 50# braid.... its no trophy, its just a big fish.
