LOL. there was an old story about the original Atom 40's.It goes like this. Bob would patrol on trash and clean up days for broken chairs, shovels ,table legs an what ever else fit the bill as regular wood supplies were scarce back then.there might be a bit to that. I've got so many original atom 40's both with an without the boxes it's nuts. They weigh from 2.5 oz to 3 oz rigged. Some of the wood is pine and there is some basswood. I have 1 in my hands right now with patent pending on it thats pine. The earlier ones weigh 2.5 oz with the ist stamped hand cut lips'pre stainless- that are 47 vintage before the patent pending that are cedar. So what wood he used most is up for grabs. The bodies with out hardware weigh 2 oz on average. None are weighted but some of the brass wire n hardware has some weight to it and the hooks well he used what he could get his hands on they're all over the place from big 5/0 down to 3/0 with some havng a single on the tail. , LOL well . I just got done weighing 25 of them. Well some are different lengths ,widths, tapers and weight so it seems that the shape is the important part and the middle lip placement. Bob tried it all. I think that's why the P-40 ,plastic 40, came about. Less inconsistancy so easier to make.
