You go on a privately owned website and call the site owner an ahole and he's not happy about it??...this is my shocked face...

I agree, both sites have their place, I am here 99% of the time.
I do look at the other site from time to time. Frankly I shied away from SOL because of what I heard about "rules" but that's the way it is. You don't like it start your own site. Good luck having time to fish.

If it happens in a private message....?
One thing SOL does, by having their political forum, is to make ScottW and Jim look almost sane! (Almost)

Sometimes there is a reasonable expectation of privacy. While I am reasonably sure I have been called an ahole in PMs I have not gone looting around in PMs to find out. It would be fairly easy for a site admin to do and nobody would be the wiser but that is not the environment I want to work in nor provide for others. Law enforcement starts knocking on the door, maybe the PMs get opened - depends on the scenario.

yes this is the same one I am getting- this after I got a 503 error and then a few days a 404 error.
Maybe he should have shut it down for 5 days and got it done right.

It's up now and seems to be working well. As far as "maybe he should have"... maybe you and Tim could only have figured that out by Tim trying it out and seeing that it still needed work. His rear view mirror probably works pretty much the same as yours... and mine.

Tim posted that instead of transferring everything to a new server he decided to set up a temporary server first and have that migrate to a permanent server so the site would not be down as long. I think that cause unanticipated problems and if he had to do it over again, he would have bagged the temporary server.

I'm a member of a bicycling site that used to be powered by Huddler, and recently switched to the same IPB platform that SOL runs on now. They didn't use the interim server, and their site was down for a full week during the switch. And they had a fraction of the data to transfer as SOL did. There are still things that were lost in the switch, and no clue as to whether the site admin can recover them on his own.
This company is one of the few that has successfully done a Huddler change-over.

Understood John, but as the site owner, if you wanted to look at PM's its well within your rights...to me, PM only means private from the general public...
for the record, i've never called you ahole in a PM...at least i don't think i have...

I have no way of being sure, but having watched how Tim and the Moderators operate, I'd be very surprised if Tim went through anyone's PMs unless there had been some issues between that member and the other Mods or other members or unless there had been some violation noticed. I really think he has better / other things to do than randomly kick back and read our PMs. There had to be a reason otherwise he wouldn't have wasted his time... just my take. Any more than you'd waste your time trying to track down a problem or check out a problematic member if you hadn't seen or gotten a report of a problem beforehand.

I can tell you unequivocally that as an administrator there, I have never looked at any member's PMs. I don't even know whether I could, and I know that I wouldn't have begun to know where to look.

He's gone through my "Private messages" Kevin. Back when I was fishing 9 nights a week on rocks and sand from Maine to Napatree. He pm'd me asking me why I got so many pm's. I told him he was free to read them, theyre all from folks I was fishing with. I believe he was under the impression I was using my pm's to sell lures or whatever. Nope just a beach bum

OK.... never was aware of that. However, I don't think he does it just for entertainment or without some reason. Meanwhile, I'm like Paul... I play be the rules, and I've never had a problem with him or the site. And I'll have nothing more to add to this discussion. I like John. I like Tim. I like fishing and I like all the positive stuff I've gotten from both sites. It's a pretty good life I'd say. Finito. :-)
