But how often do the electors not cast their vote for whomever won that state (as decided by the people)?

The point is moot if we can't even get the best candidate nominated.

But the nominee isn't selected without regard to the people. There is a primary in each state, and at the convention, the state delegates go through the formality of giving their vote to a candidate. But doesn't the delegate always cast his vote for whoever won the primary in that state?

Who votes in Primaries? Not the Un enrolled. I have to register with a party to vote in a primary. Sorry but I choose to vote based on the candidate. Unfortunately that leaves me out in the cold on primary day.

"Only voters affiliated with a particular party may vote in its primary. State law provides for closed primaries, but both parties allow unaffiliated voters to choose their ballot on election day."

Ok, you got me there, in most states, you have to be a registered member of a party to vote in a primary. It is your choice to remain unaffiliated, which while I admire that, the downside is you are choosing to exclude yourself from the primaries.

I also hate the fact that some states get to primary months before other states. So in early states (Iowa, New Hampshire) all the candidates are still on the ballot. By the time my primary rolls around, my candidate may have dropped out, my choice is more limited. I have never seen the sense or fairness in that. I am guessing that when the CT primary takes place, Ben Carson may well be out o fthe race by then. Doesn't seem fair that someone in NH gets to vote for him, bit not someone in CT.

I do ike the system though, I think it works well on nmost fronts, except for the gullability, laziness, and ignorance of so many voters.
