I agree. Names I've never seen or maybe seen once have posted here. SO.....
You "lurkers" need to be more vocal so we know you are out there.

Think about this:

The more traffic John came verify, the more advertisers he can get to buy space on the site and thus, the better chance of the site surviving. The guy doesn't make any money here as it is.

OK, later, I'm goin' fishing. I'll see Clammer someplace.

No boat, back in the suds.

There must be a dozen of these exact threads "what has happened to S-B" "Where's everyone gone"
The downfall of this once primarily (and for the most part) surf-casting website is the general attitude of the regular posters. It's marshal law/majority rules, plus the constant barrage of people bitching about any pic of a dead bass. Even when someone posts that they had a great time catching and releasing schoolies, the very next post is about how they should be "taking it easy on the little guys"...
The only ones left are the old guys who come here every day, the people who come here to argue in the political forum and the dooms day moratorium preppers ready to pounce on any wrongdoing/ spotburning/ photoshopping/ etc..

People who don't like Facebook either don't understand it, think big brother is out to get them or have simply allowed too many arseholes in their friends list.
Facebook is how you make it, That's the allure. Hell even some guys I'm friends with in real life I have to un-follow because of their constant political/gun-rights/anti-Obama/anti-government BS.

This has always been my favorite fishing related site. There are a lot of knowledgeable guys here that I have learned a lot from over the years and continue to learn from.

The majority of the content on Facebook is a joke and it usually only takes a few minutes for what might be an interesting discussion to turn into some kind of drama.

I don't post much here or on Facebook. I'm more the kind of person to sit back and listen/read than to jump into a discussion. I do also think there is some truth to what others have said about people being fearful of posting pics or reports for fear of criticism about spot burning, why a fish wasn't released, or the alleged weight, or why it was out on a boga etc... I think that's a way bigger issue on FaceBook with all of the "experts" on there but it certainly has happened here at times.

I like idea of a tournament. They always seem to draw a lot of interest.

The fishing legs were a big part of my interest in S.B, Lots of fishing related conversations going on.
Everyone would bring something to eat, Wait for Dusk then go fishing. That's what made the difference, Meeting you guys.............
Instead of just posting On-Line......

That is pretty much my feelings also. The only other thing I would add is that it seems like if you don't personally know people here, you're not going to get welcomed in. I've been lucky that I know some of the folks here as I met them fishing or at events over the years.

I'm here, really haven't been posting much but still here and still my favorite site.
Maybe a RI/MA get together or separate legs. .
Met many good guys through this site, the get togethers and at the water fishing.
Need a new S-B sicker, peeled off what was left of the other one a few days ago.

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.

1984 was a warning, not a guidebook!

It's time more people spoke up with the truth. Every time we let a leftist lie go uncorrected, the commies get stronger.

I didn't think that anybody used FB anymore. Certainly if you are under 30 FB is not the place to be. Instagram and SnapChat are where it is at.

As far as this site goes, people share very little about how their fishing has been. I understand why and I don't post much until the end of the season to limit activity where I fish. I don't know what the solution is but this site is one of the few where there is little BS and people are more than willing to help you if you ask, but you have to ask. Bringing back the legs is a good idea.

I'm here every day. I don't post a whole lot but check the site first when i wake up, its been a tradition for about 10 years now. This site helped my learning curve a lot when i first got started. Tons of info especially on equipment and tactics.

Everything is better on the rocks.

I still check in almost every day but don't post a ton. This site was invaluable to me years ago when I was starting out. Leaned a ton and met some great people. There used to be a lot more discussion of fishing techniques, equipment, theory, etc. That seems to have dropped off a lot. I don't really think its a facebook thing, just that that stuff can only be discussed so much. And the whole spot burn thing. When the site was relatively new, there was more to discuss that hadn't already been beaten to death. Also, I think the fishing was generally better than and more people were fishing, especially in the surf, and not just the canal.

I check in almost every day, but don't post much. Life has just gotten too busy the last few years. I go on FB but not for fishing stuff, other than a couple private groups I'm in. When I first joined this site, I was strictly a boat guy and learned a ton about surfcasting here. I still suck at fishing, but at least I don't look as foolish as I used to. I met a bunch of great guys here that I'm happy to call my friends, and still try to get out and fish with as many people from here that I can. I like the idea of a site tourney or bringing back the legs, but it might be tough for me to make it. Most of my weekends are booked solid with family stuff or kids sports.

FB/IG/SC are the issue.

Its not so much that they are replacing the fishing/SB talk, but they are monopolizing people's online time.

There are other factors, like the decline, but there is only so much time people have online, and they are spending much of that on the social media sites.

Same story here. Great library of information and advice when I was starting out, It also put me in contact with some great fisherman that taught me a ton, and continue to do so.

Besides the fact that other social media outlets are more popular and time consuming, the other main challenge for SB is the fact the video and picture upload limits are too small, and or don't auto size when you try to upload. I Can't tell you how many times I've been trying to post a picture and can't because of the size limit, and instead of going back and manually resizing it I just say forget it...

something clever and related to fishing

I agree with most of what has been said but remember, this is basically a not for profit site. Yeah, all the other neat features would be nice to have but they all cost time and money and John doesn't have tons of either.
Maybe there should be a nominal fee for being a member of this site. John could then afford to add all the niceties that everyone wants. I'd pay $10 a year to be a member.

No boat, back in the suds.

I am happy to see that this discussion has gotten some traction, with so many views and posts contributed in just a few days.
Some members have been drawn back in, some have become more willing to contribute, at least in this thread.
Regardless of the reason(s), there needs to be some accountability by all members..... Contribute more, continue to contribute. Encourage other fishermen to at least take a look at the site. Whether the moderators need to come up with posting guidelines with regards to the almighty spotburn, posting pics, or the "dead fish" commentary is a discussion the site membership should start thinking about. I personally think it is OK to take fish for the table. And that is backed by the law. We can all recognize the chest thumpers, which is a whole different thing compared to the excited PB post or newer fisherman who shares a new milestone.... This place used to police itself pretty well. Should be able to do so again without the mods having to become site Nazis.....
And lastly, the discussion that we have had in the past has steepened the learning curve of many, including myself. Sadly we have lost too many sage members who led us so well in many fishing subjects. The three who come to mind most are Flaptail, Habs, and Saltheart. Numbskull, Rockfish, ProfessorM are among the present members who I look forward to imparting their experience and reflection on those experiences.... Just because we have discussed something before doesn't mean we can't share the subject again. Without live active threads and discussion, this place would be nothing more than a closed library......

And I might add that the site has always had conservation in mind.... Hence no more team in the Striper Cup, as one conscious decision made by the membership. There is room here for the dinner fisherman, the C&R fisherman, AND the Commercial fisherman here....
