One thing to remember is that if you are using a teaser, which we make many of, and sell thru out the year, it also depends on which length rod you are using. When we make our teaser rigs for our light tackle rods, we use 30 lb seagar floro, the main leader is about 2 -3 ft long and the teaser leader is about 1/2 that length. The reason it works so well is the premise of chase. It looks like the lure is chasing the fly and the fishes instint is to react. It also give you the advanage of size of bait presentation.
If you tie up a leader 5-6 ft long and cast it on a 7 ft rod you will not get the proper distance on your cast because it will be too long to load the rod properly, on an 11 ft rod, that is different.
I have also found that the reason our teaser goes up on the main line soley depends on the lure you are using. The more aero dynamic the lure the less the leader will come up on to your main line. The most times it will come up on the main line I have found is when using soft plastics as they just don't cut thru the air like a popper or metal. I use braided line soley and have never had that affect my teaser usage.
We tie 2 separate knots on a small barrel. 1 for the fly leader, 1 for the main leader and we tie a small heavy snap at the other end of the main leader for the lure so we can change up when we want to.
I have never had terminal tackle affect my lure usage as far as hooking up. If a fish can swim by that lure and tell me that he won't take something that isn't real already because there is a snap in front of it I don't think so. He is eating something that isn;t real already.
The reason we use 2 seperate leaders, one for the fly and one for the main leader is that if you get a double you don't have both fish pulling on the main leader with a dropper loop on it and have a chance at losing both fish especially if they are large. We have also found that most of the time the larger fish will take the fly over the smaller fish. But either way you decide to us them is your own preference as most guys have said. But usiong them IMO will defiatley increase your hookup ratio.
