JMO but if I was just starting out I'd buy a Penn 704Z. Bullet proof, great in the surf, has caught more fish probably than all other reels combined and, most of all, easy to fix if it breaks.

Almost 50 years chasing stripers and I still have my original 704. The only things that breaks are the dog spring and the bail spring. You can eliminate one problem, the bail spring, by buying a bailess kit.

No boat, back in the suds.
