I quit rinsing reels years ago. Preserving the cosmetics of the reel at the expense of increased risk of water intrusion didn't make much sense to me. Keeping them in a dehumidified basement is crucial, however.

On the line of what George said.... I wipe them down a couple times a week with a wd-40 soaked rag... or if the ride home was especially wet.. other than that.. once a season they get stripped and soaked in a vat of kerosene wiped dry and any worn parts replace... they get a LIGHT greasing ...and oiling and then get reassembled and stored in the basement...
