Couple different ways to do it. None right or wrong. Mine is accessible, and right next to the fuel filter, so I am going to be in that area come springtime changing the filter anyway. Given that, I have just disconnect the intake(and out take) hose from the pump, clean the screen, and run the pump for 5 seconds to make sure it has run dry. Then I leave it open, and dry for the winter. Years ago I used to pour some antifreeze into the pump with a clear hose and run the pump until it showed in the well. Just don't need to IMO if I have it open and dry... (always shocked me to see the antifreeze when I first used the pump the next year...)
