Not only was Nebe way off on the number killed, McVeigh didn't say he was a Christian. Although he was raised as a Catholic, he said he lost touch with that faith and never really returned to it. He once said that he did have core belief but wouldn't say what that was. He later admitted that science was his religion and just before his execution he said he was an agnostic. He took the last rights by a priest just before he was executed, but, from what he had previously said about not believing there is a hell, and if after death he found there was, he would use his military training to “improvise, adapt, and overcome,” which an agnostic willing to "improvise" would do when offered last rights--hedge his bets in case there really was a hell.
