I have 30# fireline on my 706 and it works well. I fill it all the way with fireline except for some mono backing like the way Ditch described. You can always reverse it at some point to extend its life.
Don't worry about breaking your rod while using fireline unless you get snagged. If you do, pull straight back and don't use the rod to break the line and you should have nothing to worry about.
The only thing that I don't like about fireline is that it will cut you much easy than power pro will.
