The New Lure idea
Oh yes, a few busts never holds me back.
As a person that is limited to how many plugs he can carry, I was thinking of a way that can maximize space in my plug bag.
The problem I saw is I have to carry plugs for every spot I plan to hit. This can mean fast water, slow water, deep and shallow water. I need plugs that do well in all those areas.
The other problem I saw were great lure designs that dive too deep such as the Windcheater. My favorite plug. It dives way too deep. So what, I carry some bombers, mambo minnows, and redfins? That's going to take up so much space.
So I was thinking. Uh oh. But this one I think is pretty good. How about a changing lip system? I'm still working on some pictures to pitch at companies. Basically, there is a little hollow lip with a square piece cut out. Then, you slide a lip in and a plastic spring, built into the insertable lip, pops into place. If you don't like that lip or it's not working for you, you press the spring down, pull out the lip and slide in the new lip you want.
The good thing about this, the lips, when form molded, have the depths imprinted on the lip so you know how deep it will dive.
I'll have drawings done at a later date.

Your drifting off again, Patrick. Work on fishing the basics not on making the wheel a little more round please.
Thank you...

Pat,
You can also just have multiple surf bags, each loaded with different kinds of lures for different locations. I use 3 now: One for day time bass/albies, one for lighter tackle bass action (smaller bombers, tins, bucktails etc) and a bigger one for heavier bass fishing (bigger plugs, jigs etc).
Not sure I'd want to be fumbling on a cold dark night trying to select plug lips.

What happens when that lip hits a rock...sound like you are out a plug...That will create space in your bag.
I can get 3 bombers, cheaters or 4.5" megabaits, 4 mambos, or 2 7" megabaits in one tube. You can even get a mambo inbetween tubes. I easily got 30 plugs in my bag, that's not including the rigged rubber eels, pork and jigs and tins. Bronco blb2 Find the space instead of changing the plugs. A vest will also create a lot of space for you bag.

Patrick, the other issue is don't underestimate how little it takes to cause a plug not to run true.
If the eye or lip or even the hooks are slightly off, it can cause the plug to pull right or left. I would think that any lip changing system would be tough to maintain... especially in strong current, heavy surf, bouncing off rocks, salt corrosion, not to mention what a nice bass or blue would do to it.
Its an interesting idea, but their are plenty of ways to fish the water column. You can fit plenty of different plugs, plastics, etc in a decent surf bag. Its also IMO, part of what makes a good surf fisherman... Fishing limited water with what you carry with you.

All very good points.
Schoolie, I never thought about how the plug would run. Frankly, I don't have an answer for that. I'll have to think about that for a while.
Charlie, if the lip breaks, you buy a new lip for it. Just like when a lip cracks off one of your lures, you buy a new lure. That BLB2 bag looks interesting. Care to share more on it? I assume the tubes are circular. I have the 3 tube deal for sliding on a belt. That's where I keep my snaggers and bucktails.
I don't care for it too much but I think it's just the model. First, the metal closures have rusted after only a few times out. Second, the front pouch is way too small. They could have made it bigger. That's where I keep a lot of my trailers for my bucktails and I just barely fit 10 or so in there. But the tubes are definitely large and strong. Indestructible even. I like the large loop in back. I use a pretty wide wading belt. It's about 2 inches wide with a plastic buckle. How does the BLB2 hold up? I have the now medium size canyon. The 10 square tube box. I don't know. It works but I should have gone with Bronco.
Jaiem, I would love to have that luxury of having different bags. It's just not in the budget. Plus, I never know what I'm going to do until I get to the water and I take a look around so that means I carry everything I have. I can be fishing the marinia one minute, and break towards the reef the next. That's just how I am.

IMHO, since it's just the reef versus the marina, one can get a variety of lures applicable to both without resorting to multiple bags. those plano inserts tucked in your waders should increase your space capacity.
Additionally, if you're using eels....then you know what to do...

See, it's not just the reef or the marina. If I'm down at the marina and I decide to hit the reef, I fish the entire stretch of beach inbetween. Why not? I'm going by. I might as well. Unfortunately, our beaches are better suited to swimming than fishing although you can get decent fish off there.
Case in point, my buddy Eric, an old irish fella went down there with a light action 6 foot rod strung with 8 lb test and started tossing a sassy shad. Hooked up with a 22lb bass. They come around the beaches so don't discount them. Although I believe that if you hook up with fish there, they are just passing through as opposed to other places where they are actually holding.

Patrick...The lips on my plugs rarely break, but if you had them interchangeable...they would break more often.
Don't worry about getting a new bag, worry about learning a few different lures and becoming a sharpie at the reef. You have the 10 tube Canyon...You should be able to fit all you need in there for just about any location that you will encounter between the marina and the reef. A few darters, a few needles, a metal lip swimmer, a popper, 3 or 4 bombers, a few mambo's. a few cheaters and a some megabaits. That should fill your bag, you may actually have some room left. Since you should only be fishing at NIGHT, You only need black, yellow and black / purple plugs. You don't need every color of the rainbow. Once you learn the area, you will learn the color patterns if there is one. Simplify your bag and fish at NIGHT!
